3rd Planet From Sun.
Could be a massive win for the Sharks if he ever figures it out.
He has definitely shown flashes in the past.
For the Leafs we get rid of a guy making too much money to sit in the press box and the new coach was never going to put him in regularly

The Leafs can just about bury Benning, if they need to.

One or two of Benning, Timmins, and Myers will come off the roster, by hook or by crook, when the LTIRs clear.

Did he really? He's played less than 2.5 seasons. He's played well at times and inconsistent most of the other times. Not all players developments are straight lines. This will be a terrible trade.
He's played over 200 games in a Leaf uniform and can't beat out Simon Benoit for a job because he's a marshmallow. He wasn't going to develop the ability to act like he had a pair, if you're a marshmallow you have to do other things at a superior level and he just didn't.

Lilly never earned his minutes in Toronto. He was given minutes because Dubas took him high. And when the games got tough, he shelled up and played worse. He was terrible in the playoffs every time he was given an opportunity.

His 2023-2024 was worse than his 2022-2023.

Terrible at handling the forecheck, can't battle up front and move bodies away from the net.

He's a decent puck-mover, but not an exceptional skater.

He has also had a number of injuries.

San Jose gets to take a flyer on him and the leafs get a 6/7 defenceman and some picks. I guess its decent for both teams.

there was room for him to move up in the leafs d core if he earned it.

inconsistent dmen is bad for the leafs at this point. open cap space to improve elsewhere or to bank for the deadline is more important imo. the leafs window is closing so even if liljegren figured it out later it wouldnt matter when auston matthews and the gang are 30.

Not very good for Toronto . Lil was a depreciated asset but figured hed be worth more than a 3rd and 6 th . Was the odd man out but I could see him doing much better elsewhere

liligren has gotten worse year by year. He’s already 25. He’s an absolute bust. He was terrifying to have on the ice. He’s been horrendous in the playoffs too.

Addition by subtraction here

Leafs got fleeced, Lily is worth more than that. Good skater and can move the puck, his mistakes/flaws are all coachable. Don't like this trade at all.

Lily was way too soft. Wouldn't clear the net, wouldn't dish a hit, loses way too many puck battles. Has a muffin shot, no vision and zero confidence. Good riddance to him and best of luck to the coach that was going to coach those glaring issues away.

As a Leaf fan, the Leafs are going to look back on this trade in a similar context to how the Kadri trade is viewed -- nonsensical.

Liljegren is going to go on to become a very solid top 4 defencemen with opportunity and confidence in SJ, and we'll look back at this deal, and say "WTF for?".

Ultimately, it had to be done, and presumably this was the best deal out there, but this was an extremely poorly managed situation from basically June.

On a number of Leafs fans posts a number of years ago...
And a number of habs fans were saying

Josh Brooke
Cale Fleury
Victor Mete

Were going to be great top 4D a number of years ago as well.

Most Fans on hfboards are homers first.

Any ability to scout and assess the capabilities of a player and potential for players to grow within your team is very limited with most fanbases likely having a few fans who actively follow prospects league wide in active capacity and can semi-accurately scout and assess a prospects future within their organzaition with little to no emotional bias involved.

LIlijgren can hopefully carve an NHL career and play some seasons for the sharks. Good working player, just not able to become what leafs expected

Good for Lilly, he’ll get to play regularly without walking around on eggshells and getting yanked for multiple games after every mistake.
