The way Kempe is turning out, I would have gladly traded him and someone else for Hamhuis.

Kempe is turning out fine. He's still 19. Just because his numbers have
stalled a little, he still has 11 goals 17 assists 28 pts on a non-offensive
team. There are no offensive dynamos on the Reign. He was arguably
Swedens best player in the WJC. He has also been injured and not full 100%. He's probably the best skater on the Reign and even his skill
level is better than anyone there as well. Mersch may be a better goal scorer, but Kempe's got a ton more skill. When was the last time the
Kings had a rookie in the AHL score at least 50 points? About never.
Most of the ones that have progressed, took it up a level in yr 2 or 3 there. I'm glad the Kings didn't trade him. Hamhuis would have been great to have, but not for Kempe.

I don't think any of us are asking for the world with McNabb / Schenn / Scuderi. We are not asking ANY of these 3 to score or do anything dynamic. We just want them to contain, play smart, be positionally sound, and make a good first pass. However we continually see detrimental play. That's the thing that kills me is that we just need serviceable guys to do basic things, and we are getting wildly inconsistent games from these 3. Little different with Scuderi since he flat out is just getting too old for this intensity.

We have enough up front and one of the most clutch goalies of all time to get us pass a lot of teams, we just need our bottom 3 D guys to be basic D guys and I think that's really enough. Here's to Gravel and Mcbain getting in the line up and being the answer. Their footspeed alone is enough to do a better job of containing these quick SJ wingers.

Just looking at game 1 I think one of those guys are not like the other two

This thread is great! Can't wait to see how it looks after game 2.

Good news is the Sharks fans that were hoping the Kings would go up 3-0 in the series so they could do their own reverse sweep will have to wait another season.

I guarantee that IF we lose, no matter how we lose, there will be some form of a "Did the Kings choke?" narrative. Not to mention the inevitable burying of the Kings era.

And I couldn't love it more. 2 cups in three years is the envy of 28 teams. You don't get hated for being cute and harmless. You get hated for cramming fans' hopes and dreams down their throat when they start chest-thumping that they've got the best of you.

the good news:

Luke Schenn UFA
Jamie McBain UFA
Jeff Schultz UFA

the bad news:

Brayden McNabb RFA
Rob Scuderi for 1 more year
Matt Greene for 2 more years

With Martinez out and little to no good options on defense, Sutter needs to rethink the forward lineups and restructure them to focus on their defensive strengths. I am thinking we should reunite the King-Lewis-Brown line. It was a very effective shutdown line during the regular season around December. Also, we should insert Shore in the lineup because of his strong possession numbers. Thinking something like this:

Lucic-Kopitar-Toffoli
Pearson-Vinny-Carter
King-Lewis-Brown
Versteeg-Shore-AA

I think we should resign McBain. He is a cheap 7-8 defenseman that we can plug in and out of the lineup and who provides quality 7 minutes a game. Hopefully Greene retires. And I think Scuderi's total cap hit next year is like $125k right?

no it is not, it's 1,250k!

but that's not the problem, nor do i have a problem with any of the D listed above if they are given proper roles (i.e. most of them are #5D to #8D)

the problem is when i have a #5D playing on my top line (i.e. McNabb)

or when i have a guy that should be in the AHL/KHL playing top 4 minutes (i.e. Scuderi)

so as long as these players are off the books, DL won't have the temptation of plugging them in the lineup!

all those guys need to bounce ASAP! but like i said, if you desire keeping a McNabb that's fine... but you better make sure there are at least 4 more players above him on the depth chart

i like those lines but Clifford will not be benched, he had a great game and Sutter likes his vets

Yeah, I agree with your points. Too bad there are no defense options in the summer. DL will have to get creative to find someone or we will have to take a stab at playing Gravel and Fobert regularly, which means no serious cup run next year either.

I didn't see the game but from reading it sounds like the D was a mess. D that can't move the puck just don't belong in todays game. I still hate the Lucic trade and in hindsight would have preferred trading for Dougie Hamilton or a defenseman. Hopefully Lombardi makes a play for a guy who hasn't fufilled his potential like Dumba rather than overpaying for Lucic.

eh, anything short of a cup run is gonna be considered a choke by the Kings with how many people have them picked.

Man did I ever crush the Game 1 comments, especially in relation to the lines.

Seemed we were more confident back then. I guess missing the playoffs instead of being off of a Cup/WCF will do that to you.

I was surprised by all the pundits picking LA. Hopefully we will see their best going forward but it's going to be a group defensive effort.

It's no wonder the best and most even-keeled posters have left over the years. You guys are insufferable.

Ha, you did!

BTW, game 1 of that series was the single worst game Sutter has coached since he came to the Kings.

Really? I thought we were pretty reasonable after Thursday's game, relatively speaking. You know, compared to the lot of us jumping off a cliff during the first half of the 2014 San Jose series.

The fact that people are talking about NEXT year when we are in the goddamned playoffs is just absurd. Live in the moment. This is what we've been waiting for since 2014.

Haha...you gotta admit, this will not be a easy series. Defensively we are in trouble, and if this goes to a run and gun offensive game we are toast

No one thought it would be an easy series. But I agree with you there. Either way, talking about next year is just dumb.

we are whining like other fan bases here, kinda like you guys WANT to be the first ones to say how bad we are, we lost by one goal when our best defensive forward got beat , not going to happen very often ,we will make adjustments , plus they have the passion that only teams like SJ, St.L or Van. Have from being eliminated by same teams again and again , series starts sat. And since this is sports and not whatever video world some of you guys live in why not wait till we lose 4 games to start ripping the entire org......you guys have mentioned everything from draft picks in 07 to that drunk commie for why we lost game one , why not mention that SJ had every reason to be fired up,, like game one to open 2015 , and we were still in it , knew this was going to happen when we got home ice, much rather go on the road to start."..................PS ducks lost and there d turned over like crazy and none are named scuds or Schenn, funny how that happens when good teams play each other
