Given the flat nature of this draft that's pretty solidly in the wheelhouse of this pick.

The Athletic's full Mock from yesterday had Wiesblatt listed as "interesting" as early as 30 to Dallas, and actually pegged him to the Sharks' 2nd rounder at 34.

I've seen him play a handful of times. He was solid as a 16 year old in the WHL finals last year.

A second-round pick, 25th overall, by the Prince Albert Raiders in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft, forward Ozzy Wiesblatt had an excellent season. He scored 25 goals and 45 assists for 70 points in 64 games. Wiesblatt was especially dangerous on the power play with 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points with the man advantage. In the summer he played for Team Canada at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup. He played a bottom-line role and picked up one assist in five games, winning a silver medal. Wiesblatt also appeared in the CHL Top Prospects Game, playing for Team Red.

Last season Wiesblatt was part of the Raiders team that won the WHL Championship. He scored 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points in 64 games. Wiesblatt also added five goals and five assists for 10 points in 23 playoff games. He also scored one assist in three Memorial Cup games. Wiesblatt was an alternate captain for Team Canada Black at the 2018 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge. He put up one goal and two assists for three points in five tournament games.

I mean it's a Fringe pick at the end of the first round. This could have been nothing more than showing some love to a kid and his family on a special day they'll never forget. Yeah, we probably liked him enough to take him in the 2nd anyway, but it shows class and that was awesome.

Didn't see him do it at first, but just realized on second look that Doug Wilson Jr. used sign language to draft Wiesblatt before saying his name.

That definitely pulled a few heartstrings.

For any of you who don't know why he did that, it's well worth the story to check up on.

Well done, Jr.

Cant ever just pick someone on the board and maybe pick this kid in the second round

He would've been "on the board" at this point. Most scouting services seemed to have him in the 30-40 range. And that's really all you can ask for from external scouting looks because the secret is that NO team is going to just go out and pick the highest name left on whatever mythical publicly available "board" that any fan subscribes to. They all have their own thing.

Cory Pronman's write-up on him:

33. Ozzy Wiesblatt, RW, Prince Albert-WHL
March 9, 2002 | 5-foot-10 | 183 pounds
Skating: 60
Puck Skills: 60
Physical Game: 35
Hockey Sense: 60

Wiesblatt was a top player for Prince Albert this season following an excellent 16-year-old season where he was a contributor to its WHL title run. Wiesblatt checks a lot of boxes. He’s very quick and skilled. He makes skilled plays at full speed and is a handful for defenders to stop when he comes barreling down on the rush. His hands stand out, with extremely quick twitch touches and ability to inside out defenders. He can attack in a direct style, but also has great vision and can pull up to make a tough play. He was on the flank for Prince Albert’s power play and looked like a pro in the type of plays he made in that role. He’s barely 5-10 so that is the major knock on him, but he is competitive and doesn’t mind the physical engagements. He is listed as a winger but can play down the middle.

Marc Habscheid, coach of Prince Albert Raiders, on Wiesblatt: “He competes well. He has a swagger about him. He wants to be in pressure situations. He has a quick stick and quick feet, and he is smart offensively.”
