Player Discussion Simon Nemec

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Calgary has about a week to sign this man before a pretty terrifying possibility reveals itself. A 9.5M x 5 years offer sheet for Nemec while he’s waiting to be signed by a team he has no loyalty screws Calgary regardless of the outcome. Matching the offer sheet would walk him directly to his first eligible UFA year while likely overpaying him along the way. Choosing not to match it nets us only a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd as compensation, meaning we could potentially have just given up a 1st round pick for free. Neither outcome is pretty.

I love the trade, but Conroy officially has a week to sign this kid before an outcome happens that could be straight up fireable. If I’m a young playoff team, I already have my clerical staff drawing up that paperwork.

The pick value we’d get from the teams with both the cap space and the picks to do this (2027 1st, 2nd, 3rd) would be roughly equivalent to what we gave up

Given that the first would be mid teens at worst instead of 25-32 like the Vegas and Colorado picks will likely be

Obviously wouldn’t be an ideal situation but we wouldn’t be out of pocket either

People gotta remember, a player making 8 million this upcoming season is equivalent to one making ~6.5 2 seasons ago. Am I saying they should pay him 8+? Not necessarily, just saying times are different.
Agreed and if we really believe in his potential, 8 x 8.5-9.5 doesn't seem ridiculous. Especially with what Byram is reportedly asking

Mind you, Byram has a couple decent playoff runs (including a cup win) under his belt, plus basically back to back 40 point seasons. So whatever Byram’s ask is, you’d think Nemec’s would be considerably less.

I would very much argue with the, "didn't get a fair chance in NJ" part though.
From what I gather from a few people who did watch NJ a lot more than I have, one of the things that was noticed a lot was that if Nemec made a mistake, he would get benched for a bit. But when Hughes made the same mistake, nothing happened.

I'm not against benching a guy who is making mistakes, but I can see why he thinks he didn't get a "fair chance" when he's getting punished for something others aren't.

On the upside, the Flames have been very good with defenseman in general for quite a while, and Huska has been a solid part of that. With that in place, I think we'll see some good growth in him there. If it's actually a "1D Weegar" or just a "3D Hanifin/Andersson" type is to be seen, but anything in that range, and I think we're going to be happy with it.

There's been a lot of chatter I've seen about people pointing out that he's Slovak.

Hopefully our coaches can work to make him a bit Fastervak.
