WHEN he was draft he was seen as a 2-way defenseman.
That part of why he when so high.
NOW many NJ fans see him as a 1-way defenseman.
I am curious if we can rail him back to the 2-way d-man of his potenical.
The way Conroy see it at the starting line is:
Bahl - Nemec (they played as a pair before in NJ)
Parekh - Whitecloud.
With Parekh on PP1 & Nemec playing both on PP & PK.
Calgary has about a week to sign this man before a pretty terrifying possibility reveals itself. A 9.5M x 5 years offer sheet for Nemec while he’s waiting to be signed by a team he has no loyalty screws Calgary regardless of the outcome. Matching the offer sheet would walk him directly to his first eligible UFA year while likely overpaying him along the way. Choosing not to match it nets us only a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd as compensation, meaning we could potentially have just given up a 1st round pick for free. Neither outcome is pretty.
I love the trade, but Conroy officially has a week to sign this kid before an outcome happens that could be straight up fireable.
You can teach defense, you cant teach offense. With the right environment and coaching there is zero reason why he cant develop into a decent player in his own zone.WHEN he was draft he was seen as a 2-way defenseman.

I thin it's always good to remember that certain things, especially for defensemen are learned with experience and often are improved with experience. I know some guys never get it, but some just keep learning. Especially when it comes to reads and positioning. It's been often said that a dman needs to play about 250-300 games in the league before you really know what they are. That he's already played 155 at such a young age is a plus but it does mean this next season is absolutely critical for him. The development and coaching staff have their work cut out for them and so does Nemec. I do think he's got a great mind for the game but needs to learn how to use it. Getting faster and stronger as well needs to be a priority the rest of the summer.
I would be hesitant to go big money big term with him at this juncture. We've already been burned by giving out deals to guys we don't know where they fit or how they'll perform with Calgary. Something similar to the Hanifin and Lindholm RFA deals(adjusted for cap inflation) they got when we acquired them would be the sweet spot for him. Treliving screwed a bunch of stuff up but those two contracts were excellent business.
I mean, it's not like we have any forwards that can score.I wonder if we consider running 2 dmen on PP1. Gridin, Frost, Corey/Hubes, Zayne, and Nemec. Could be interesting given how dynamic both he and Zayne are.
wouldn't that make literally every trade ever "sus"What i find sus at this very hour is nobody outbid us.
I mean it a lot but it beatable too.
The deal is quite clear with where our limit were set!
We can do deal for #35 overall not #30.
hahahahahahawouldn't that make literally every trade ever "sus"

I trust Conny to get it done. 3x7 bridge deal to see what we have
His ask from a another team might be different than from the Devils. He was clearly looking for a change of scenery and believed he didn’t get a fair chance in NJ.If Nemec's camp was willing to go $7M, I presume he might still be a Devil. I could be wrong, as the D is crowded in New Jersey and someone needed to go, plus Seamus Casey needs a shot at the NHL too, and then you have Silayev coming soon as well.
But the long-held rumor is he wanted $9M AAV from New Jersey, which the Devils were not willing to do for him. Thus, he's now a Flame.
IIRC, when we got Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin from the Canes, both guys had asks in the 6s due to being disgruntled. Both ended up signing <5 contracts with us.If Nemec's camp was willing to go $7M, I presume he might still be a Devil. Not sure he was looking for a change of scenery, but you may very well be correct. I would very much argue with the, "didn't get a fair chance in NJ" part though. I think it's just flat wrong. His ask from a another team might be different than from the Devils. He was clearly looking for a change of scenery and believed he didn’t get a fair chance in NJ.

Ok, so how long was he rumoured to want $9M for? What was NJ rumoured as having counter-offered?
I didn’t say that he didn’t get a fair chance, I said HE BELIEVES he didn’t get a fair chance. Not sure he was looking for a change of scenery, but you may very well be correct. I would very much argue with the, "didn't get a fair chance in NJ" part though. I think it's just flat wrong.
Let's look at it objectively. Nemec is still only 22 years old and has already played 155 NHL games. He only played 112 AHL games.
The Devils unquestionably would have liked him to season more in the AHL, but he vocally and publicly complained, he was basically a P.I.T.A. in that regard and because he was a #2, I think it's fair to say he forced his way onto the New Jersey roster earlier than the team likely wanted. I think NJ did the best they could in an uncomfortable situation, and management/coaching was likely sick of him. Some things got public that probably should have stayed in the room (by both sides).
