Player Discussion Simon Benoit discussion.

This was Bennys first playoff goal of his entire hockey career. I guess he wasn't joking during his post presser.

Jesus, guy only scores 5 goals as a 20 year old in junior and now he's about to be playing a key role on a cup contender in round 2 in the show

This is an insane stat. :amazed:

If you go back to the start of his 17-year-old season in the QMJHL, Benoit has played 659 total games and scored 22 times, roughly one for every 30 games. And somehow this was the second consecutive overtime winner he’d factored in on, becoming just the seventh defenceman in NHL history to accomplish that feat.

These are the types of players this team has missed with calculator boy running things. His fans need to learn it now
Contrast him as our 6 in the playoffs to Holl and Lil. A liability is now an asset, that's a big difference. He's exactly what you want out of a playoff style 6, and it showed last year too.

All I want from him this summer is to learn to play rushes on his off side.

If we could have OEL on his strong side moving the puck that would be massive.

I don’t know how fast stutzle is but OEL looks like he was going to get beaten twice. Recovered well but a faster player might burn us

Said I had confidence in him in the playoffs but never dreamed he'd have an OT goal and assist in B2B OT wins. Well deserved for a guy who battles night in and night out.

His OT goal last night reminded me of Rielly's OT winner vs Vasi.

Leafs unsung hero of round #1 vs Ottawa.

Defensively he has been solid, while tossing his weight around and keeping Stolarz sight lines clean by clearing he crease.

Offensively he set up Domi for OT goal in game #2 and then scored the OT winner himself in game #3.

As a 3rd pairing Dman you could ask no more, and ideal fit to Treliving's Big, Mean and Mobile Dcore build. .

The thing that's realy interesting for me, is the fact that they seem to have finally achieved a real sense of balance to their D in these playoffs.

For some teams, you have the Prongers and Neidermayers of the world averaging 30 minutes a game or close to it.

Harley in Dallas is doing it this year, Toews/Makar in Colorado.

For the Leafs, there is a 3:16 second gap between McCabe (at 21:51/game) and Carlo (at 18:35/game).

While the Leafs have been somewhat outplayed this series and I'm not neccessarily sure they deserve to be up 3-0, it is encouraging to see that they are comfortable with all 6 D on the ice.

As a 34 year old Leaf fan, there really isn't many highlights in my Leaf fandom career, but the battle of Ontario and the early cup runs of the late 90's and early 2000's are really the only memories I can look back on with joy.

As fun as the Mathews/Marner/Nylander era has been at times, it was arguably easier to be a Leaf fan during 2005-2016. This current era has been marked with high expectations coupled with constant disappointment. So to have a bit of a flashback to former times has been so much fun. Even if it is temporary.

Also, as a new father myself, nothing really matters outside of being a good dad/husband. In the best way possible. All of the things I used to worry about became insignificant almost over night. In turn, I started to see results in other aspects of my life that I once obsessed over and failed to meet my own personal expectations of. Counter to what one might think, the less I cared, the better things worked out.

I really think Benny, like all new parents, struggled after the birth of his daughter. That said, there has been an undeniable quiet confidence to his game for the last little while. At the end of the day, win or loss, he goes home to the only thing that really matters. It's amazing what that type of perspective can do for you in other aspects of life.

LETS f***ING GO BENNY!!!!!

Stutzle is fast but this has been a regular problem with OEL when he's played his offside.
He will get beaten with speed on the outside but also he's extremely passive in attempting to step up and close space/ stop zone entries because it looks like he doesn't trust his speed/agility.
Almost all his life he's played his strong side and you learn certain footwork playing there that is totally different then when you're on your weak side.

Some players can make a seamless transition where others not so much.

Cheers to this, from a new father as well.
