Yeah that may work. Still means we only have a 3 year window to win. The last 3 or 4 years probably look awful but we are also probably in rebuild.
Exactly. All of these contracts still around after the window closes can be retained at 50% and dumped if need be.

This morning Dregs said Tavares wants market value probably in the $6m neighborhood. I'd pass unless they spread the money over 6 years like they did for Tanev.

As for Marner, he asks does Marner accept $13mx8 or does he push it away saying he is gong to test FA?

I’ve been uncomfortable with the idea of bringing back Tavares but $6 million is kind of what you’d envision for a hometown friendly deal. It’s less than Kadri money and more than ROR money. It’s fair.

I think they can/will get the Tavares extension aav down with term, which I expect to be about 6 years. He clearly doesn't want to go anywhere else so I don't think it's a big deal either way

Marner is harder. I can see the agent threatening to pause negotiations until after July 1st to try and get a preferential deal locked in. Either way it certainly sounds like just a matter of time until they announce something

Tavares sure but it can’t be on an expectation that he’s going to be 2C for the duration of whatever the contract is, there has to be some room to get a 2C of the future and look at Tavares as a 3C or top 6 power winger after a year or two transition period. He looks great this year but realistically he’s not going to have the legs to backcheck in high end 2C minutes in the future.

No rush to resign either.

Tavares I think will be an easy and reasonable resign, with a lower annual hit for an extra year or 2 of term.

He can’t be paid like a 2C, and he should start to transect year into the 3C slot.

I have no such confidence with Marner. Even if he has a lighted out playoffs, which he’s never had, I don’t know how thrilled I am to be chained to this core, with above market contracts for the next 5-8 years.

If they can’t get it done while in their primes, and we don’t have the cap remaining to bring in quality pieces to surround them and push them over the top, why are damning ourselves to the same playoff futility on top of the 8 years we’ve already been through?

I don’t hate Marner, but he represents the only real opportunity to change. If he’s resigned, I think we are all about rinse and repeat.

Love to be wrong but we’ve seen this show….. a lot.

No thanks unless Tavares is gonna sign a 4x3 or 3x4.

They've both done nothing in the playoffs, to sign them now would be insane, especially when they can have another atrocious playoffs and then we're really stuck with them.

Be proactive or play the waiting game; there's an element of risk involved with either approach. Those players can be signed sooner based on the hope of what they'll be able to accomplish, or management can wait until later and enable the players to weigh the team's offer against whatever offers may come from rival teams.

Walking an asset like Mitch Marner to July 1 without a contract would be an absolute disaster class by a GM. You might not like him, which is wild given how good he is but whatever, but he's a top tier player in this league and letting him (or any player of his calibre) walk for nothing is a terrible idea for any team.

They will get a deal done before July 1. Question is do they wait to see how he performs in the playoffs or do they cave in the regular season like they did with Nylander or does Mitch leave money on the table.

If Mitch takes them to the woodshed and shits his pants in the playoffs and they fail to get by Florida in round 2, odds are most of the fan base will be toxic towards him, the core and the idiots responsible for running this core back.

That depends on who you replace him with. IMO

If you let Marner walk and instead give his money as a UFA to Mikko Rantanen a big power forward I see that as an upgrade.

Regular season.

Rantanen has outscored Marner 3 to 1 in goals and 2 to 1 in points when it matters most.

Can’t blame the player. Management put themselves in this situation. The previous GM gave the team team no chance to win with 5 yr contract and the current GM was in tough spot when he arrived.

They can’t rely on signing UFAs. They have to weigh all the options, but letting him walk for nothing is just poor asset management. On the other hand, they’ve been managing assets poorly for 8 yrs, so what’s one more.

As this off-season proved quite well, that toxicity lasts until about two weeks into the season, at which point people fall back in love with them. That won't change.

There has to be a point with any player where the team has to say "no".

If he demanded $20M, would you sign him? (I know there are a couple of posters who would, and one who would call it a bargain if an unnamed ex-GM did it.)

How about $15M? $14M? $13M?

If he's willing to take $10M I'd say sign him tomorrow: if he insists on $14M I'd say goodbye.

We may all have different cut off points, but there has to be one. What's important is the team's.

Stop saying this. Repeating the same mantra’s not going to change the fact that he’s NOT one of the best players in the world when things actually matters.

Leafs should let him walk instead of signing him to Drai-money (he’s nowhere close to Drai), especially if it’s before the next playoffs.

The fan base should already be toxic towards him, so I don’t think that yet another bad playoffs will change things for him
