Should we eliminate the bronze medal game?

It's a North American thing.

In both the US and Canada the mentality for hockey at least is Gold or nothing.

And by the way team Finland got 240 000 € from that bronze medal and the players decided to give it all to different charities. One charity for example helps Jaroslav Otevrel who was paralyzed in a hockey game and other helps to secure training possibilities for junior players that come from poor families.

Swiss Womens team seemed to enjoy their win

This is the mentality of fair weather fans. As you can see and read on the last page, the players don't have this mentality.

Eliminate the so called top teams that aren't willing to go all to win it. If you're not ready to do that, you're not worthy of playing period. All you are at that point is a spineless coward.

Or just someone from a top country training to be the best, not 3rd best. For a team sport, 3rd place sucks for the big powerhouses in the world. To be an individual standing alone with a bronze is a huge accomplishment on the other hand. Why should we be proud to settle for 3rd place or worse?

All the Finnish posters need to stop taking this as a personal attack. It's reality, not a personal attack on your prized bronze, so relax. It's a great accomplishment, just not one USA or even Canadian fans/players would be happy with. Now, at the end of their careers, looking back on it, I'm sure they would appreciate a bronze medal in their trophy case over nothing, but not today, not with the loss of the gold so fresh.

I can guarantee if Canada won the bronze medal, it wouldn't be celebrated.

Right or wrong, it is what it is.

It's not poor sportsmanship or sour grapes, I'm not saying to eliminate the game, just saying how it is viewed in NA.

I'm sure many Europeans feel the same way about the third place game at the World Cup.

And this poor sportsmanship and lack of respect for the sport, the Olympics and their opponents is an admirable thing? Since when?

It has absolutely nothing to do with Finland.

Great that they won, enjoy.

In North America it wouldn't be celebrated that's all I'm saying..

To powerhouses sure. But Team USA is no way a powerhouse of the great sport of a hockey.

I'm Canadian, so can someone from another country explain to me what a Bronze Medal is?

Ha.. just kidding.

In all seriousness though it clearly means a lot to some countries.. mostly Finland.. so they need to keep playing the game.

Why shouldn't you? If you are truly a powerhouse capable of winning it all, shouldn't you act like that and always strive to be the best you can be, including after losing the chance at gold. Do you think you will improve your game by winging that bronze game? Do you really think that's the way to get better? The fact is, right now there isn't any group of big powerhouses so far above others, on any given day there's a bunch of countries that could win it all. By winging a game against any of them just shows poor sportsmanship and lack of respect for the opponent, the game and the tournament.

Spin it however you want, that's just how it is.

Even if they didn't care about winning it for themselves, they have no excuse to not try to add to their countries medal totals.
sadly I don't think the medal count was anywhere remotely in their thoughts nor would I expect it to be. It's always tough to lose in a semi final game especially to a rival team who you thought you could compete with. Not making the final was a huge disappoint for them especially considering they made it in 2010 and were so close to winning. But the performance they put on in that bronze game was pathetic. At least have some pride and continue to play like you did in the beginning of the game.

By powerhouse I didn't just mean at Olympic sports! Also real world modern day. America definitely has it's attitude, for better or worse.

I don't know about that. If the US was playing in the Bronze medal game of the FIFA World Cup, I'm pretty sure they would go all out and try to win it.

It doesn't make any sense that hockey would be the only sport in the Olympics that doesn't award a bronze medal. It's a ridiculous notion.

That's because the expectations for The US men's soccer team are not that high. Them making the knockout stage and top 16 is an accomplishment in itself.

Neither did I, which is why I didn't single out the olympics themselves but the sport in general and whatever tournament it would be that's on the line. I'm also of the belief that the vast majority of americans and canadians DO care about whether they win or lose a bronze game. Watching those games in any given tournament makes it painfully obvious that they do care, including the bronze match in these olympics. Did US give up after Finland took a decisive lead? Sure, but they still did care. It's the fairweather fans who don't.

Winning the bronze is better than the silver. If I was a player, I would rather end the tournament with a win, than a consolation silver.

What? The bronze is even more of a consolation medal than silver is. At least the team getting a silver is at least in contention to win the gold in the final game.

I don't understand the mentality that a competitor would rather "win" a bronze than "lose" a silver. I don't fathom how someone could want to be 3rd rather than 2nd. Its only a function of the Olympics needing 3 medalists that there is another game.

Extend the analogy: the losers of the quarterfinal games get to duke it out for 5th-8th place and the winner gets a brass medal for the winner of 5v6 and tin medal for winner of 7v8. Would anyone say "I'd rather win the tin medal and be 7th than lose the silver and be 2nd!"?

If you come to win the gold, every other scenario is losing, consolation medals be damned.

if there was no bronze medal game where would we go to lol at the americans losing again
?
