No. It is not his fault.
Everyone knows tavares offered an aging reaves a 3 years contract

He heard they needed to be harder to play against so he decided to load up on guys that can fight but can't skate because that's what makes a team harder to play against in today's NHL

Not sure what this would accomplish, Tavares wasn’t the one who built the team. The leafs don’t play well together, they need to break up the core.

Seriously. Trade or get rid of everyone except Matthews and build a team with a defensive identity.

Giving him the captaincy wasn’t the problem

Signing him in the first place was

Tavares is not a leader, he should be volunteering to remove his C.

In a thread with some very bad takes, this is the perfectly simple & correct answer.

I have nothing against Tavares - I've never doubted his effort, his desire or his commitment to the team and by all accounts seems like a good guy & teammate. But he's not a leader, at least not for an NHL hockey team that wants to win in the post-season.

Or, at the very least, a long overdue act of actual accountability for this roster that has done nothing but fail.

They should have done that after his nonchalant level of play when they lost to Columbus in the Qualifying Round and missed the Playoffs in the COVID bubble.

Why punish Tavares for performing like the player he's always been? It's Toronto's own fault for thinking he's the type of player who puts you over the top.

He's always been a regular season compiler whose play/production drops when it matters and the Leafs still decided to pay him that ridiculous money thinking he'd miraculously "blossom" outside of New York.

That loser Keefe needs to go first.

Get the last remnants of Doobler stench away from the team, and they’ll improve a lot.

I'd go for Shanahan

At the end of the day, he chose the GM that chose Queef, it's time he gets the ax

Tavares pretty much betrayed his old franchise to go to the TML (imagine being this idiotic lol), I don't think kicking his ass is either deserved or would it achieve anything

Forgot that he’s scored more than 1 series winning goal ? Or just dumb?

Oh cool. He's scored two important goals in his 15 year career where vast majority of the rest of the time he's a ghost.

Not my fault your team is paying someone $11 million a year and forcing your roster to have major flaws and all you've gotten out of it from him is a single game where he did something positive.

Stripping John of the C doesn’t fix the leafs being a poorly built, soft team full of players who only want to make the max contract value and don’t care about winning.

I said it last year - they should have moved Marner out while they could. It’s obvious Shanahan won’t allow any big moves though because it’s easier to just maintain status quo than it is to rock the boat.

A thread just to say you made a thread. Ridiculous to think wearing the "c" somehow makes him responsible for not winning a playoff series.

Fans that think JT is the whole reason why the leafs havnt went farther in the post season are silly.
