Some pros:
- The Habs are clearly missing an elite forward. Nylander has 230 points in his last 228 regular season games (going back to 2020-2021), that includes a slightly above-average goals-to-assist ratio.
- Nylander has 40 career points in 50 career playoff games.
- Appears to have a negligible injury history, and is 6 feet tall.
- Nylander is 27, and a 7-year contract would take him to 35. It is expected that the cap will go up increasingly in that time period.
- Nylander is a RW, so he pushes Gallagher, Ylonen, Armia, and Anderson down the depth charts.
- Would undermine a division rival.

Some cons:
- Safe to assume that this would cost 11+ million/year.
- Acquiring Nylander in 2024 would probably mean not acquiring Draisatl in 2025 or McDavid in 2026, or to go after Elias Petersson by trade or offersheet.

Personally I vote yes. That is because there is no way the Habs compete for anything until Hughes acquires one more elite forward, and he needs to pull the trigger when one is available. I'd be comfortable with Hughes going up to 12 million a year, give or take.

I'm a big Nylander fan. Picturing him playing with Cole and Suzy makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Though sadly, I think he's going to be out of our price range.
What is the Habs' "price range"? Doesn't the team have one of the best cap situations in the league?

No doubt about it - but I’m pretty sure he’s gonna end up in Tampa Bay

Not cap wise. But we've kind of set the standard with Cole and Suzy's contracts. I'm not saying they wouldn't go over that, if the right player became available. I'm just not sure they'd do it for Nylander.

Edit: I like your new profile pic!

I can't see this happening....

He's a good player but we don't have Matthews, Marner, Tavares or a PP for that matter, that tends to increases the stats line. He would cost more than CC and Suzuki at this point. This is not the time for the Habs to make the acquisition of such a player timing wise and also, the only reason he'd sign here as a UFA is if we overpay which we shouldn't.

If HuGo magically gets rid of Gallagher Anderson Armia by next season its another story and even then..I'd rather play Roy for 750k..., we're not competing just yet

If we got rid of those 3. We'd have room for Roy and Nylander. :D

The odds that he reaches free agency and there is any chance he comes to MTL seem remote. At his age he should want to compete for a cup.

The Habs should have interest in players like this and the money wouldn't scare me as much as the term. Hopefully, if they ever do land a big fish it will be a centre.

I would say no.

First off, the timing is probably not right. Nylander will be closer to "win now" age and the habs probably won't be there.

Secondly, Im usually not in favour of making a big splash on wingers.

Don't sell the Leafs Cap problems short lmao

Even before his last contract
His RFA status even dipped into training camp and more, an impass they called it

And if all that happened at RFA status, imagine with UFA Status when you would be in control this time, you can TOTALLY see him think "well this time, won't be no impass, ALL TEAMS will be bidding on me now"

I'm really surprised to hear all this 'loyalty' talk lol
Teams are gonna CHUCK money at this guy
And I can tell you right now his agents advice is NOT "well, you know what I like it here too in taranna, let's not listen to ANY other teams, especially not those pesky Californian teams and all that great weather, YUCK"

I would not be upset if they did - talent deficiency and all that - but as it stands right now he would become our best player. The Habs don't take a meaningful leap forward with ol' Willie occupying that spot. Hopefully the draft, a trade, or Dach reaching his potential as the new Getzlaf could change that (not banking on the first two...). Why did Dach have to get hurt?

There has been a years long PR campaign leading up to his UFA status that has sought to elevate Willie far above his standing. He's not just insulated by the other three on the ice, but also especially off the ice where they, and Rielly, all serve as towering lightning rods to media and fans. Does he remain Cool Guy Chilly Willy in Montréal?

As others have said, highly, highly doubt the mediocre Habs are on his radar anyway.

In his case, the money should take care of itself whether he stays or goes. The point was that all players want to win. I don't make predictions, so don't know where he'll end up but believe it will be with a good team.

Good teams are unlikely to have that much cap space available.

I think the biggest problem is that we are still going to be in full rebuild mode so we will want to have our young stars improve. Signing a player like this seems a bit premature.... but I do like him. Toronto should get rid of the pig face.

I'd be very surprised if there wasn't interest in this player from some good teams willing to find room depending on the contract he's looking for of course.
