Rumor: Should the CBJ pursue Elias Pettersson?

  • Work is still on-going to rebuild the site styling and features. Please report any issues you may experience so we can look into it.
I seem to be in the minority here but I don’t see KJ as untouchable like most. If we could have Petterson, Monahan and Fantilli down the middle for years and someone will take the Severson contract, KJ can be included in the deal along with a pick/mid prospect.

Yes he he is creative and has great hands, but he also does dumb things like soft passes across to offensive zone while short-handed and trying to outmuscle a defender in OT. We no idea what his potential is but we do know the history of EP.
How do I dislike a post?

They should consider trading the guy in your user name IMO. Too risky with his injury history.

Don’t disagree on Chinakhov, but he won’t get EP with his injury history.

Although KJ is a nice piece it still doesn’t mean He is essential to the future of the team.

Not that it matters since Portzline kinda already shot down the rumors, but playing devils advocate that we WERE in on this (or considering it) and after thinking on the subject for a few days, I would say NO we shouldn't go after this.

EP is a great player, but he's moody and has some sort of issue with "intense" situations. Whether thats the market in Vancouver or teammates like Miller, we don't need people who fold under "intense" situations. We just got rid of a guy who was the same way in Laine and the room was way better off for it. The kids are growing together and seem to enjoy each other. The deal would likely require one (minimum) of the "core" untouchable young players to go, and I just don't think thats a trade we should swing while we're still in building mode.

If the price was literally Sillinger+Lindstrom+ something else as the core pieces? Then yeah, obviously go do that. But thats not the case. It would require Fantilli or something, and I just don't think thats smart.

I don't think that's even obvious. I'm not sure if we want Pettersson's contract at all.

Like Laine's presence here was a bad thing, it doesn't matter if we could have him back for a lower price, we just shouldn't want him. I think Pettersson is better than Laine, but an equally bad headache in many regards, and has a worse contract.

My only thing is are the headaches caused by the market pressure more so than one individual? Because if it’s the market, that wouldn’t be a problem here (could be an issue in playoffs though). If it’s an individual, then it could be more of a deal breaker because there’s no guarantees we wouldn’t have some similar personalities here.

I think it's more Pettersson than anything else. Vancouver media is not that bad. They try to be positive. We've had headaches with players and tension between fans and players here (e.g. Elvis), we're not a safe place for players who have issues.

KJ is a line driver, more so than Fantilli, he's also cost controlled on a cheap contract and fits the core perfectly, you don't trade those types of assets.

What's good about KJ is he learns from mistakes so it makes people like you with bad idea's have to go back awhile to find examples to use against him

my primary issue with including KJ is that he is currently just as productive (on a per-60 basis) as EP40 and more importantly, for the next 2.5 seasons he'll cost over 6x as much (close to $25m in real dollars over that time)

imo pettersson is (or will be) worth his contract, especially with the cap rising. but if they swing for pettersson they need to push to compete in the next two years. having KJ's contract in that mix really helps.

if the contracts were the same i'd take EP40 over KJ no question (and i'm higher on KJ than most here) but with a $10m AAV difference there's no way you include him in this deal.

I'd rather have a defenseman.
tired: pettersson or a defenseman
wired: pettersson and a defenseman
inspired: pettersson, a defenseman, and a goalie
