Should Bruce Cassidy get the full-time head coaching job for the Bruins?

20-12-1 translates to about 50-30 over a full year. Maybe even better next year, with the addition of McAvoy and Carlo's progress. Still short a frontline winger!!

Not just no, but hell no.

Take out the bump from his first 5-8 games or so that you see from every team bringing in a coach midseason, and the results ain't so good. Terrible starts in all 3 home playoff games. Guys taking idiotic penalties, including too many men calls, which is on Cassidy.

He was overmatched against Boucher, who is a total system coach without much of a shelf life.

I dont have much confidence in Cassidy at all. And if the Bruins give him a 3 year deal, they are asking for trouble. I don't know who the long term answer is, but I do know it ain't this guy.

These are some points people should look at.

While I'm not as far against Cassidy I see where the argument is coming from.

Throw out the first 10 games and he's a .500 coach at best.

You can't just "throw out" games that don't fit your narrative.

Throw out the 12 games they lost and he's the best coach in the league.

I'd see what's available. Cassidy should be in any final consideration, but I definitely wouldn't want him to be the only candidate considered.

I voted 'yes' but its based on two conditions.

1 - That the core players on their exit interviews confirm what they've been saying in the press about positive aspects of the change and future. Bergeron has been especially vocal in a positive way.

2 - Its a 2 year deal.

Most people look at the first ten as a bump purely because of the change. You could have put a housecat behind the bench after all that time in Julian's offense draining structure and gotten a ten game bump.

Several very good points here.

Any interest (if BC not signed) in a coach like Sutter? He did get LA 2 cups. But maybe he's too much like Clode?

There is a minor thread between the two ... Bruce Cassidy played for Darryl Sutter in the minors (they won an IHL title togheter) and the first coach to give him a shot behind the bench was Duane Sutter. Cassidy helped him while rehabbing an injury.

Totally different level, but I knew Bruce as a player and a young coach, and his straightforward demeanor is precisely the guy I saw in the minors nearly 20 years ago. When he moved from the ECHL to the IHL, he took over a team that was badly undermanned, was completely out of it late in the season. They lost their best player to an NHL callup, lost their best goalie in a trade, yet rallied, managed to get a playoff spot, win a round and push the best team in the league to the brink. Very similar to this year's Bruins team (other than the fact that this year's B's weren't badly undermanned until the playoffs when they were running practically an AHL defense out there). In 1999, it was one of the best coaching jobs I'd ever seen. He's a good coach and seems to be a great fit with the Bruins.

I think he should be back, but a lot of these are good points... Especially him getting severely outcoached by a gimmick, albeit an effective one. That's a pretty big question mark there.

I don't know how much of the delay of game/too many men were on the players, but the team was extremely undisciplined and it KILLED us in that series. If we don't take 2-3 horrible penalties late or in OT, it's pretty likely we win that series in 5 or 6.

I think he's a good coach... He just only had 3 months of actual experience, besides his stint with the Caps years ago. He was also hobbled with injuries to key players, and let's be honest, the team in front of him was paper thin... Even a gimmick could key in and shut down 2 or 3 of our players, and that's really all it took. Besides the 4 game losing streak, you can't ignore the boost he gave this team. Under Claude we don't recover from that. But I agree that there are many red flags. I think he'll be back, though, and I'd be happy with it. 2 year deal.

It strikes me as odd that people are saying he "should get" the job without knowing who else might be available. I think the player analogy holds here. Based on his playoffs, I think most people might say Sean Kuraly "deserves" a 4th line job...but if a potentially better player becomes available, I'm going to choose that better player every time. Did he probably earn more time? Sure. But players earn more time and then lose their job to 'better' players anyway. Tough luck. That's how it works. So unless we know the other coaching candidates, how can we say Cassidy is the 'right' choice?

And before people say "well look at his record when he was here", consider what usually happens in these 'interim' coaching situations. Being an interim essentially means the team wanted to fire the the prior coach, not that they wanted to hire you. That seems crystal clear. Teams don't hire "interim" head coaches in June after a search. They are stopgaps...the best port in a storm when you think improvement might just lie in a change of voices. So in this case, the voice changed and we saw improvement. Happens a lot, and it's no surprise. Does it prove enough about Cassidy? I'm not sure. Could just prove the team responded when their long-time coach was canned for their failings. They were awoken, much like business people change their behavior when their bosses are fired or they're transitioned.

Long story short if they love Cassidy, then by all means hire him. But if they weren't 100% sure (and they weren't or else they'd have hired him without the interim tag before) and really like a few other options, interview those options. Give them every chance to win the job. This isn't about doing right by a current coach...it's about finding the right coach.

I think he should get a full year but he should get to choose his assistants.
I don't blame him at all for this loss. IMO, it was combination of injuries and certain (supposedly) top-9 players (Spooner, Beleskey) not stepping up with any goals or anything game-changing. Those two players didn't sacrifice enough and they can be dismissed. I'm pretty satisfied with the efforts of most of the others.

Do your due diligence and see what other options are out there, but in the end, yes for at least a year or two.

Going to agree with this as well. Many good points, the late penalties (especially the too many men) irked me.

Part of me wants to see if there are better options over the summer. Part of me thinks Cassidy deserves a full camp/season as head coach of this team. I'm also worried about subjecting the players to 3 different coaches in a matter of months (especially the young ones).

I say yes, but not with full confidence that he can be the guy to lead us deep into the playoffs year after year. He is not one of the worst coaches in the league by any stretch, but he has a lot to prove before I hold him in high regard.

I'd unenthusiastically give him a 1 or 2 year deal.

Agree that Bruce's chances at success in the playoffs was negatively impacted by the loss of half his defense corps and his second line center for almost the last two games.

I like his upbeat offensive style of coaching. But he's got to do a better job of preventing outlet passes resulting in breakaways. This was obvious in the Ottawa series but noticeable in the regular season as well. This could be the downside of playing upbeat hockey. But adjustments can be made to prevent the breakaways.

I'm all for giving him two more years as I believe he's the right man to coach the youngsters who will be making their way onto the roster.

As a side note, I'm all for getting Marc Savard or Adam Oates to replace Sacco.

Not sure.

The trap has been around for a long time and he didn't react to it very well.

We had four defensemen injured, along with a couple of forwards (Krejci, Acciari) that were in and out of the lineup throughout the series.

The Bruins won two games in this series, giving a scare to many players and fans of the Sens. A comeback was so very close, but with several bad penalties that they took (delay of game, too many men) combined with atrocious reffing, I think Cassidy did an amazing job with this group. They never gave up under him. The overtimes were exciting and nail biting, to say the least. We made the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.

Remember Kuraly's debut? First game in the playoffs, he scores two goals, one the game winner! I love Julien, but he would NEVER have allowed those kids to be on the ice during key times like that. He probably would have played the first two lines until they all dropped onto the ice from exhaustion.

Yet you think that Cassidy couldn't beat the trap? With a healthier lineup, I think he would have done it. We just needed a second line to help balance the first line that could score. Some of the goals scored came from our third and fourth lines, which to me, was impressive and not too shabby. I fail to see how much more he could have done with this lineup, between injuries and we had a good amount of youth playing in this series.
