While we are waiting for our Captain to make his decision,
I wanted to start the debate on whether or not he should retire in the opinion of posters here on HFBoards.
Not whether he will or not.
We see what happens to HoF sports professionals when they push it too far and try to hang on too long.
Is it time?
Can his body handle the rigors of another cup push?
Will leaving now after this playoffs tarnish his legacy?
Is it worth rolling out another playoff attempt roster with kids waiting in the wings and the cupboards nearly bare?

We are fans, not experts. Our opinions and views will be just that, a fans opinions and views.
However, I figured this would open up some good debate while we wait on Bergy to make his decision.

I love Bergeron but I think it’s time. He always has an injury or two by the end of the regular season and they start adding up. I think if they knew he was coming back and could trade Coyle Bergeron could play 3rd line next season but I don’t see it happening.

It's not a yes or no question. It's an "if" question.

If he is willing to take a more managed game load (50ish games?), I'd say no, he shouldn't retire.

If he is not willing, I'd say we just did the "play all the regular season games you want" bit, and he played 78 damn games (more than he had in many years), and, of course, he was injured when the playoffs came around, so I'd say yes, he should retire.

I'll never, ever say that someone should retire. Especially someone like Bergeron who's still remarkably effective.

He's had a long career, he deserves all the flowers in the world if he wants to retire. It's his decision, not ours.
What about Chara?
Lots of people on this board saying he should have just stepped out with dignity and not go through the final two seasons. Being mostly ignored and having a towel thrown in your face by Ovechkin while then being a bottom pair guy in New York is not how many envisioned nor wanted Chara to end his HoF career. On the other hand, Brady did well after moving on from the Pats when many said he should just face facts. Yet, that did not go well for guys like Brett Farve.
Knowing when it's time to put down what you are doing and recognize it's time to move into a new season of your life is a talent that is rare. This is an opportunity for Bergeron to do just that. Go out on his decision, not someone else's like a coach or doctor.

Should he retire? That's kind of a hard question to answer. I don't know what kind of condition his bodies in, I don't know if he still has the passion to play, I don't know what his priorities in life are right now (family vs career). There are a lot of things I don't know to actually make an educated opinion. Without all that info (and some) I'm really just giving an opinion based on my experience, my life and my environment. So taking nothing really into account about person side of Bergeron.....just put up nearly a 30/30 season and up for another Selke award while still being on of the best face-off men in the NHL. The Bruins are celebrating their 100th season and it would be special to be the captain of that team. My team just had a first round exit after setting numerous records. With all that, no he shouldn't retire.

Chara's time was up with the Bruins. I never once said "he needs to call it quits" - He still wanted top 4 minutes and he simply wasn't the same player. I would have kept him as a #5 or #6 easily at 12-15 minutes per night.

Again, not my call to tell people when they're done.

Actually, that's a lie. I said Ondrej Kase should have retired two concussions ago and I'll stand by that one. Guy is one knock to head from entertaining himself with an abacus.

As someone who has experience with back injuries, I would retire. He's 38 years old & herniated discs are nothing to fool with.

However I can see Bergy coming back- 1) I don't think he wants to go out on such a bad note (playoff choke after winning 65 games) and 2) the Bruins celebrate 100 years next season.

I think he should but I don't think he will.

At absolute minimum he is the best defensive forward in the NHL. Perhaps he has aged into more of a match up driven 2nd line center but if his body allows for it he has more of a role than most players playing.

I (like everyone else) would love to see him back but understand why he'd want to hang 'em up. I think the 100th anniversary of the team is a huge draw for Bergeron, just based on the obvious love he has for the franchise.

The Chara aspect doesn't really apply here. By the end in Boston, Chara had slowed down quite a bit and wasn't the player he used to be. Chara was also 5 years older then than Bergeron is now. Bergeron is coming off an outstanding season, and while he isn't at the very top of his game, he isn't that far off. He can still get it done. And he said the back injury didn't require surgery.

With Bergeron it’s not about his play like Chara, it’s about health. Look at Landeskog, he’s getting a cartilage replacement in his knee. How’s his knee going to feel in 10 years? Is one more year worth a potential lifetime of back pain or whatever his next injury will be? Can they only play him 50 games and is that best for the team going forward? Glad I’m not making those decisions.

besides his excellent play and leadership we desperately need him to take another minimum 35+ contract for the upcoming season

He’s more than good enough to continue playing at a high level. At some point he will take a step back and we’ll need to rely on him less going forward, but he’s still an elite player.

All comes down to what him and his family decide on. Does he want to risk another life altering injury to make less money with less of a chance to win? He doesn’t play for money, so maybe, but that’s his call.

He owes us nothing and should do whatever he thinks is best.

I think he should do whatever he wants, he's clearly still good enough to play in the NHL at a high level and has more then earned the right to come back if he wants. But I'll never say no to getting to watch Patrice Bergeron play hockey for the bruins.

I'd prefer to have him around in a 3C type role to help the younger guys who need to come up. But play way less games and minutes. He can't be the workhorse he once was, it's inevitable

No way.

Monty should tell him to retire.
