Yes, see above.
These two incidents could be related possibly - did ISIL claim credit for the hit and run? Regardless, before these two it was 1985.

Does it really matter who claims credit?

At the end of the day, I feel like the days of planned attacks by terrorist organizations in western countries are over. We are too good at finding them, see the Toronto 18 incident, and countless other plans we and other countries have busted.

The cutting edge of terrorism these days is to create media ****storms and inspire lone wolves to conduct attacks on their own. These types of attacks are impossible to catch before they happen because they don't communicate with anyone.

I'm not sounding off on you, but I'm just pointing out that 9/11-style planned attacks Al-Quaeda style are dated. This is a new age of terrorism, social media style.

Fair point made.

I agree that inspiring someone to do something is just as effective, if not moreso as recruiting, training and releasing someone with a plan.

Sometimes it can be harder to tie it back to the originating group that way for better or worse.

And if that's the case, what us and the media need to learn to do is sit back and let the police do their jobs and report only actual facts after the matter rather than trying to be the one to break the newest unconfirmed report. That way we can have all the details when needing to determine whether a hit and run incident, and a shooting two days apart were both directed at soldiers - or if they happened to be unfortunate coincidences involving the wrong people at the wrong time.

Too true. These attacks by "lone wolves" are scary because there isn't much you can do to stop them.

In this case, authorities had Biebau on a watch list and seized his passport...

This is what ISIL/ISIS wants...it doesn't want to actually coordinate attacks, it wants to inspire them.

In general I find that the pace that CBC was reporting even on the radio was well done. They might not be the first ones to report, but generally they kept their facts straight and didn't jump to any conclusions unlike some other media outlets.

Some outlets were reporting as many as five shooters. Just gives you an idea of the extent of conclusion jumping going on.

It's mind-boggling how anyone living in Canada could be inspired to basically go on a suicide mission.

Life in Canada may not be perfect, but we are so much better off than most countries. It's not like recruiting a kid living in a shack in the middle of a war zone in Afghanistan. There's so much opportunity and so much to live for in this country.

They are scary, but at the same time, I think they will lose their "scariness" eventually.

One thing about Al-Quaeda after 9/11 was that they were scary as **** because it was a brilliantly executed plan, and we had no idea how complex their network was, and we had no idea what their next mastermind plan was. There was a huge fear of the unknown, and where the next brilliant strike would come.

This, on the other hand, is a desperate last resort, a ****** whimper. All ISIL is is a roving band of criminals hijacking military equipment in Iraq trying to make as much noise as possible in the media and social media in a hope to get your average street criminal here to do stupid ****. There's no overarching secret network, there's no plan. This whole thing will blow over eventually when the news gets tired of reporting about ISIL.

Kids go on shooting sprees at schools in the States and around the world all the time. This is no different than that.

I wonder what the plans are for those who are still in lockdown. It's been a good 8 hours now....people are going to need food, sleep and a restroom sooner or later.

Remember a lot of support from other fan bases when Boston was hit. Although a small consolation, it felt good to know that the support of this community was there. So I'm extending it here.

Stay strong my good friends to the North. This is a dark day and the healing will take a while, but just know you have the support of people the world over. Stay strong and remember that out of a tragedy like this, comes some of the most heartwarming compassion and togetherness you'll see.

All the best,

Mike

The response from the government should be an increase in education and adding mental health to the free health care.

Sure, but until it "peters out" how many other innocent people are going to be hurt or killed by these crazies. I want to feel secure in my city. I know that's asking a lot in this age.

As for the picture of the shooter that's on CBC...we should be asking who took that picture. Clearly that person should be on watch and be scrutinized.

My dad is in lockdown at the Parliament building, he said there's no food but he was allowed to use the bathroom.
Edit- Security just brought some food into the room lol

I find its best to stick with CBC. They seem to be more responsible about how they report news.

Sun News just runs with whatever they see on twitter.

I recall about 5 years ago on this site a poster stating that he "gets all his news from twitter now" (I think it was in a discussion surrounding the mainstream media and how it was dying in the internet age).

Reading it all I could do was facepalm at the concept of relying on 140 character messages from largely anonymous strangers most of whom would have no concept of journalistic reliability and integrity.

From this report from Reuters:

A Twitter account linked to ISIS apparently tweeted a photo this afternoon of a man whom they claimed is Zehaf-Bibeau, holding a gun with a keffiyeh covering his mouth. Oh, and according to Heavy.com, that same ISIS account was supposedly followed by Couture-Rouleau. Another coincidence?

Why don't governments delete these types of twitter accounts?
And block all ISIS/terrorism type websites so people here can't get brainwashed.
Even if it helps a little bit, it would be worth doing so.

Already is free. You can see a mental health nurse at any Health center and you can have a doctor refer you to a physicist or physiologist.
