My HA to SHL:
Björklöven
AIK
Tingsryd
Karlskoga
Nybro
Only one by five teams expect new team into high serie SHL.
Trying to understand this part. Are those five teams your favorites to advance to the SHL?
Should the SHL league increase from 14 squads to 16, 17, 18 squads in the near future.
On the one hand, I think expanding to 16 teams is very likely in the near future. No Stockholm based team in the SHL for a prolonged period of time is considered a big loss for the SHL.
However, for the overall quality of the SHL, the current 14 team format seems perfect for me. It’s super competitive from top to bottom, the mid-season lulls (‘lunk’) are seriously curtailed compared to — say — the league of ten years ago, and there are intense placement battles for making the top-6, the top-10, and avoiding relegation playoffs. That’s my opinion.
I’ve played around with the thought of expanding the league by two teams and haven’t found a format I find too appetizing.
I’ve been looking at how to avoid extra regular season games but expanding the playoffs into a full four-round format (like the NHL), but that would need 16
playoff teams, and I don’t think there’s enough quality in the HA to make that work (basically, the SHL would have to consist of 18-20 teams, or something stupid like closing the league and have everyone make the playoffs, which I’m vehemently opposed to).
I think the most likely expansion would be a 16 team league, where we’ll either have more teams finishing in no-man’s land, or some new gimmick to the playoff format(s). I think the inevitable result at any rate will be a drop in quality in terms of competition and entertainment, by how much is hard to say but we’ll probably see an increase in meaningless placement games, in my opinion.
As NHL shut SHL? 16, 17 or 18 teams in SHL who's disagree? The bottom team might be eliminated without the qualifying series and a new team goes up?
Close the SHL from promotion/relegation.
Absolutely not.
As to immediate relegation of the bottom team:
I’ve seen many fans claim it’s “unfair” the bottom team receives a shot at remaining in the league having sucked it up for 50 rounds, but my counter to that would be that playoffs are ingrained in the DNA of hockey and we haven’t been rewarding championships to the top regular season teams for 50 years. Hockey players and fans should know that no matter how the regular season played out, there’s a “real” battle coming up and you best be prepared. My team, Luleå, set a new record for points in the regular season prior to the pandemic which cancelled the playoffs. No serious Luleå fan thought we should be “rewarded” the championship without winning a playoff final.
That’s completely fair. We are into our 29th season without a championship and we can wait forever until we do it the way it’s meant to be done.
Would I be opposed to the possibility of having two teams relegated or promoted? No, I liked the old Kvalserien where there were two SHL spots up for grabs. I’m not actually sure, but I don’t think there was ever a case where both SHL teams were relegated? I also don’t think, but am less sure, there was ever a case when both SHL teams kept their spots in the league. It was a fun format.
