Jack OT cherry pick

i
Oh you must forget Pavel Bure. Dude would stand at center ice while the other team had possession in his zone.

Love a win like last night. Definitely have some systemic stuff to clean up and Dougie/Pesce/Luke are still getting to 100% and acclimating to the system, but all that being said it’s hard not to be happy with where the team is at.

Team needs 2 depth pieces for the bottom 6, but man, when jack is back to baseline you can get away with a lot because he just owns the ice. Hiring Keefe was huge.

Despite the comeback and win I did not like how we played at all. Mainly really poor coaching/preparation IMO.

Islanders entire team is built to win games along the boards. It was insane how often we were trying to dump it in on a rim and forecheck or rim it for a cycle in the ozone. 90% of the time the islanders were easily winning those pucks and breaking out.

They play an incredibly simple game and only way that islanders team is gonna win games is by teams not having skill or by skilled teams like us being too stupid. We should have been skating circles around them just by playing through our skating and skill and making plays. Game like that dumps should either be very strategic or an absolute last resort.

We willingly played their game for some reason and I can’t remember being this annoyed after a win before.
felt a lot like the Calgary game at times. We were seemingly content to play low event close checking hockey with them, which is what they are best at.

Then when we got down 2 and Cotter fights to the net front to make that inside dish to Mercer, I ask myself where was that determination to fight to the inside the rest of the game. My point being maybe it’s not a mistake to play dump and chase with them, so much as we have to play the forecheck game harder and with more determination than we are doing. Learning curve maybe ? But then again the Cotter play wasn’t really a dump in, but he skated it in.

Our first man in on the forecheck was getting there too late all night.

This is xGoals for defensive pairs with 120 minutes played.

It’s not a good list to be near the top of and for 9 mil I want Hamilton to win the possession battle more.

The same names on the top of that list are the mostly the ones on the top below. It’s not easy to outscore loosey goosey defense. (Also lol Soucy-Myers and OTT needs to get Sanderson a partner who isn’t a corpse.)

Dougie’s playing the worst defense of his career, wanting better results there isn’t wrong.

Thanks for sharing this (what’s your source btw I love this stuff and haven’t found a good place to read up). A couple thoughts —

1. 53% xGF% is pretty good, you can tell from the coloring of the cell. It is in line with pairs like Chabot - Jensen, Hanifin - Pietrangelo, and Samberg - Pionk (who are currently on the best team in the league)

2. I believe these xGFs will ignore a lot of Dougie’s work on the powerplay which is normally a huge asset for this team. Even when he’s not putting the puck in the net himself it’s one of the most threatening PPQB shots in the league. You could say that that’s fine because it’s only 5on5 but that’s where a lot of Dougie’s value comes from.

3. Offensively he’s been much much better the last 10 games (over a PPG in that span) and he’s shooting at 1.8%. Once those goals come up that will help xGF% (though I’m sure some of that uptick is from PP mins).

4. Agreed that it’s fine to be wanting more defensively. You never want to be that high up especially with a pairing making that much money. I know both GA and xGA have issues but I’m curious how many ENGs Dougie has been on the ice for? He’s their top option on defense (along with 43) when losing so he’s probably been on for a few extra ENG GAs that I’d argue are not as meaningful. Even with that, the xGA is concerning

People are trotting out old Dougie talking points even though he’s not been the old Dougie.

I’m ready to go Luke-Dougie and Dillon-Pesce if we’re changing anything. No way I’m touching the top pair. Luke-Pesce’s been pretty solid defensively but they’re creating and scoring f*** all. Luke’s looked better defensively this year. Put him with Dougie and they’ll create offensively. Dillon-Pesce will help Dillon from bleeding the chances he was with Dougie.

I disagree. Macdermid is a much better option than any of these AHL guys we’re considering to play for 5 minutes. You have 12 forwards and 1 of them is a goon. Be happy.

Most of them would be better options. He’s been on for 4 GAs in 34 minutes

You definitely have to do something with the 4th line. Responsible for two goals against in 5 minutes of ice time. I feel bad for Tatar, there isn’t much you can do with two sandbags tying you down. He might not be as productive of a player as he once was but he’s certainly above the likes of Dowling and MacDermid.

I wonder if Foote will get a chance sooner than later. Halonen as well. I just don’t know that there’s a better internal center option than Dowling unfortunately.

The pair is well on the plus side in terms of xG%. Better than Hedman-Moser in Tampa and Ekblad-Forsling in Florida. Also Siegenthaler-Kovacevic is near the top of the xG% chart so I’m not sure why you want to break up that pair.

The 3 minute rage between 1-1 and 1-3 game was intense but thankfully was so fleeting.

Love that this team is like the 22-23 team so far in that it is able to fight back in every game. Including the first isles matchup and some others (caps).

We are getting points this season in games we dropped em (last season). This season has that 22-23 good vibes.

Seeing Jack buzz around again is very relieving. Guys got it back.

He’s been much better lately. Obviously I’m salivating over the defensive play. Still want to see a touch more physicality. But also he’s been winning face offs! I’m very happy but I, of course want to wait and see if stays consistent and he can stay healthy.
All in all, much better. I’m nauseously optimistic. Let’s hope that phrase works out better this time.

The 4th line was awful but the Devils aren't going to sign MacDermid only to scratch him against the Islanders. They may as well waive him at that point.

He was the one at fault on the first goal.

I don't remember the 2nd one.
