The guy is incredible, best in the league. But I’m not comfortable paying any goalie that much. Goalies are voodoo and Shesterkin himself has only been a .915 the past couple seasons. At $13m, you need him to be the very best all the time.

My guess is he ends up the highest paid ever but well short of that 13 mark. It's rough burning that much cap on any one player, even more so a goalie.

If I'm Drury I just walk in and say whatever the highest paid in history is we will give you 100k over that and walk out. If they say no then he is gone the next day even if its just a bag of pucks.

People really don’t understand cap percentages in high tax markets.

14% was the established standard for stars.
Always was.

Panarin got 14.29%.
Price got 14%

Whether the goalie market gets back to that as they don’t play the same games now. Who knows. But this is standard and not surprising at all

Do it. Actually, pay him double that or whatever max contract would be for max term. Whatever it takes to wreck their salary cap. Then someone call Yzerman and tell him not to accept the Trouba deal.

He’ll probably get $10.5-11m and people will be conflicted on whether it’s a great deal or whether it’s possible to put together a roster around him at that cap hit

Oof. Being fan of a team that takes 10.5M, it is hard to build the right team around the guy.

Saros' contract is more or less where the ceiling should be around goalie contracts for the team to be able to work afterwards.shesterkin is even better than Saros'. 10 may be doable for the team as the cap moves up, but 11 or 12 will be a serious issue.

I can see his claim to it, but it will hurt the team's chances a lot.

That's way too much, but if this true then good luck getting him to avoid testing free agency.

He will get more than Price/Bobrovsky though.

You know how expensive it is to live in NYC? Poor guy will only be able to make ends meet with that salary… Pay the man!

People act like this is somehow an obscene ask, when Lundvist made 13.67% of the cap with his extension in 2008 and 13.22% of the cap with his extension in 2013.

If you use Lundvist's 2013 number, that would be an AAV of $12.25 million a year for Shesterkin. Which honestly seems pretty reasonable to me.
