How is it a lose-lose? The Coyotes are hanging on to a playoff spot. Do I think it can be a top 10 pick? No. But it has a decent shot at being a top 11 or top 12 pick. That and a defenseman isn't too bad for someone coming off an injury who wasn't producing.

Because on the off chance they win the lottery we also lose the pick. Additionally, the Devils lose the shot at the second first and most likely the second. There are too many strings attached. That deal sucks. It’s pretty simple.

No we don’t lose the pick. If they win the lotto we get their first next year without any lotto protection.

A late first (with no second rounder) and a late third. The better the Cayotes play the better the assets but those assets get worse due to the better play. Its a lose lose and the Devils traded Hall for a defenseman.

...what? Have you been paying attention at all, or?

I'm shocked people seem surprised he was fired, surprised about the timing. You complain that the ownership is directionless, but you fail to notice how bad that guy was. It was so long overdue it actually looks bad on ownership.

Let me put everything into perspective for you. He had 41 picks in 5 years. 2 first overalls. Let's say any of you were the GM in those 5 years. You would have Nico, and Jack, plus you would replenish the prospect pool no worse than him. Chances are you would draft some better kids in those 41 picks. I actually did not like his picks.

You all praise his trades, but I did not like 85% of them at least. He did not rob anybody in his trades. His trades were actually bad, and some pointless. Devils were and are a bottom dweller. That should speak for his trades. That means the trades were never good. Adam Larsson is a serviceable D-man. Stuff we got for Hall have to become NHLers. I don't think because you won some trade looking at the value alone is the way you build a team.

That guy failed to build anything actually. No drafted D-man for those 5 years. No goal tending (even I think they are better once the team plays better structured defensive hockey). Bad coaching choice. Holding on forever to a bad coach. Total failure to notice Tyler Hall became an accidental cancer, as no one wants to play on a team "stars" want out. Tyler Hall should have been sold at the very top. You don't build around a winger like that. Silly to assume so and cater to a single player, who never wanted to be here.

Mistakes. Lack of an overall strategy. Tons of tire spinning, by signing people, and then converting them into picks, and doing that full circle. Lack of signing anyone that would strategically be here when our prospects peak. He actually signed Ben Lovejoy. That was his best signing.

YIKES. This entire post is filled with horrible takes.

Just because the team never had success in his tenure does not mean that the trades were bad. Good grief.

"No drafted DMen for all those 5 years?" First of all, SHero was in charge of 4 drafts. 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. He drafted 12 DMen in those drafts, including one in the first and one in the second round. Did you expect ~21 and younger DMen to already be on the team and contributing? Maybe thats your own fault?

I don’t get the narrative the Hall trade was a bad deal.

Hall without an extension was not pulling much more than he did. Devils got three prospects 1-3 years away from being NHL ready, a first round pick from a team that might not even make the playoffs, and a conditional pick to offset that picks value if the Coyotes are successful.

Best comparison for a Hall deal is Stone (plus he signed an extension) and Shero got a much better deal than Ottawa did.

dude WHAT are you talking about? That isn't true at all.

What, exactly, did you expect to receive in return for Hall? I need to hear this.

I probably should have actually listened to Friedman's interview. He didn't actually say Coleman and Palmieri were on the block, but that if we wanted to go out and get somebody they'd be some of our more valuable assets. He said he doesn't know what we're thinking about guys like them that have term. So it was more of a question than an actual statement. Given that Friedman often does that I should know better than to just run with it.:o

I would definitely hire Hunter as GM. He’d be my first choice and give Scott Stevens the coaching job. Over the last several years our defensemen and system has been in shambles.

I'd have a hard time dealing with them trading Palmieri and Coleman tbh. Vatanen I understand but completely tearing it down again after 5 years of suck is not something i want to do again.

The only thing Grabner did was score that short handed goal in LA. That’s all.

That trade was a stinker. However, he's been pretty good with the Rangers and not too bad in Arizona, so maybe he also wasn't utilized that well by our coaching staff.

Generally, I kinda understand the people that defend the Shero-firing and those that hate it. I think with what he was given at the start, Shero did a pretty good job. However, I also didn't like some of the things he did. Like trading Henrique for example or trading for guys at the deadline and not resigning either. I also didn't like the return in the Hall trade and how it was handled one bit. Many times I had the impression for every step forward, we took another in the opposite direction.
I mentioned somewhere in this forum when Lehner became available that the Devils should try to sign him. Or maybe get DeSmith when he was waived. Going into the season with that goaltending duo was one of his two biggest mistakes.
The other one was keeping Hynes for too long. You can see now what this team could have been capable of, and I am sure Nasreddine is no genius behind the bench either... at least not yet. He is doing a good job though, and it seems the guys are buying into it a lot more these days for whatever reason.

Oh good, now we are getting torched on Chiclets... what a joke.

How will we survive being roasted on a Barstool podcast hosted by a doofy 4th liner most famous for having a Twitter account where their guest for the same episode was literally, for some reason in 2020, f***ing Sean Avery?

And you *****ed insistently about that pick.
I certainly did. Still don't the trading down and taking a goalie there.

I think turning that pick which was originally a #36 Overall into a #42 overall and selecting a goalie there was mistake....It really doesn't matter how things turn out, good or bad...I think using a #36 on a goalie in that draft was a really bad move.

Dude, the Devils got a lottery protected 1st and another 1 conditional first. (The conditions are they Cayotes win a playoff round and resign Hall, if only one if those things happen they get a second and if neither thing happens they get a third.) That is simply counterproductive, especially if they win top 3, don’t resign Hall and do well next year. Shero essential traded Hall for a defenseman who hasn’t played a game in the NHL. Instead of trying to pad the trade to make it look better he should of got a no strings attached 1st round pick.

I mean, not like trading down from #11 to take a goalie at #20 would have been the right move in 1990 :P

I legit probably would've been at least 20% less annoyed at the Hall trade if Shero didn't go on the broadcast and try to pump the tires on a guy who profiles as the 22/23 season's larger version of Mirco Mueller. Kind of reminded me of Pierre Dorion after the Mark Stone trade, although at least he was trying to drum up enthusiasm for a player with top pair upside, even if the chances were slim.

Either way acting like acquiring a depth defenseman for a star forward is some sort of coup is a joke. Just give the 'best we could do, market, blah blah' canned response and move on.

IMO it just seems like after the regression from the 2017-2018 playoff season Ownership gave Shero one last season to get them back to being at least a bubble team. Hence the Subban Gusev and Simmonds moves. The season didn’t work out and maybe ownership wanted to wait until Ray dealt Hall since he is good at trades and then they waited for a good day to fire him. (NFL playoff Sunday) Since Ownership wants to compete soon they felt like they didn’t need Ray for the trade deadline since they don’t want to lose any key players.

That’s just my gut feeling.
