I really like the Ghost signing. I think he fits the exact role we need him to. 3rd pair defenseman with the ability to play pp1.

His overall game is probably weaker than Skjei but Skjei can't run a PP to save his life and that's what we really need.

Orlov as 2LD will take some adjustments but I feel that this group may have good offensive potential.

Is everyone forgetting what he was like when he first came here or am I high on wombat shit?

My impression, and I stress impression, is that he looked terrible when he first came here but then looked pretty good by the time the playoffs rolled around. Be interesting to see how that measures up to what someone better informed says.

Ghost is a hell of a lot worse than Brady Skjei. He has some better attributes, but Skjei is much much better at playing defense. There's a reason one got $49M in free agency and the other got literally one fifth that amount.

Ghost looked great in his first game, and then I thought he was just pretty good. He seemed to adjust faster than most defensemen do in our system. He's a good skater with a good hockey IQ. Those to me are the most important attributes to being successful in Rod's system. I don't think he'll hit 57 points this year, but I think he'll also look better defensively than he did with the Red Wings. He is a very good fit for this team, and an excellent fit for the price.

Honestly the biggest thing we need next season is for Orlov to play like he did after we got Kuznetsov. We need him to play mean, play aggressive, but also play with strong defensive awareness. Walker and Ghost will get more attention because they are new, but Orlov is arguably the second most important cog on the D in 24-25 after Slavin.

When comparing to Skjei, Ghost is a much better ppqb.

Thats the end of the post where we compare Ghost to Skjei positively.

I think of it as both Walker and Ghost replacing Skjei by committee. Walker is more of your 5v5/PK replacement, while Ghost is the PP replacement. Good news is Ghost will be much better for what he provides on the PP, and Walker won't be quite as good but should be able to be Skjei-lite at 5v5 and the PK. And the two of them combined come in at less than Skjei's new AAV, without having to go 7 years on term. Not too shabby.

Is Ghost as valuable overall as Skjei? Of course not...Ghost needs to be sheltered some at 5-on-5, eats less minutes than Skjei, and does not kill penalties...but Ghost is signed for high-end 3rd-pairing money and Skjei got the 7x7 Brinks truck. Considering the presence of Orlov (soon to be Nikishin) to eat the all-purpose minutes, Ghost is the far better fit for us now. He's a huge upgrade to our PP and allows Burns and Orlov to play more 5-on-5 and PK.

Who knew that being a good puck mover with a good shot while being not terrible at defense would be something the Canes could really use to our benefit?

Having his scoring come alive right from the bat on this stint is great, but I believe it happened as well last time before going cold, so I'm still cautious about how sustainable it is right now. Either way, I don't think he's going to make or break our defense, I'm still curious on how Walker is going to fit long term. Early returns seem to be good, so I am hopeful we got it right.

Agreed. He isn't going to score 4 goals every 5 games. If I had to guess a number, I'll guess he hits 22 goals, which would still be excellent for a d man.

I will say his movement and anticipation offensively, especially on the powerplay, is excellent. I love me some Brent Burns, but Brent doesn't have the same mobility and reads I think due to his age. Ghost is scoring some unsustainably lucky goals overall to get to 4G right now. But Ghost's reading of the play is sustainable, and he is going to rack up some points this year. I thought 57 points was unlikely from last year, but I think it's possible from his early showings so far. His give and go play with Necas on his goal last night was just beautiful to watch. Necas needs that high end, quick puck movement skill to be effective.

Oh yes, all of this

His goal scoring will dry up, but his puck movement should help energize a lot of what we do going forward. His ability to move the puck up ice in fast, creative ways absolutely replaces that part of Skjei's game that we have leaned on the last couple years, so it is a very welcome surprise to see him already gelling with those plays, because usually it does take a bit for new defensemen to have that click here.

His ability to QB PP1 is something we haven't had since TDA, and its nice that we can have someone there doing it who we can actually trust to play 5v5 minutes. Hopefully, having Ghost run the PP full time for the next few years will help it from completely stagnating like it has in past years, if only because he is pretty good at maintaining constant motion on it, which helps steer us away from the station to station passing that becomes so easy to defend against us.

As far as running a pp, Ghost is above average for the NHL. I don’t really care if he’s scoring goals or not. He’s a better playmaker than TDA was. He’s way more mobile than Dougie though Dougie is a very good shooter and sees the passing lanes to a similar level.

If the chemistry keeps developing the way it is then our pp1 could end up being the best it’s been during Rod.

All we need is a PP QB that can help get the puck to situations that require the PK to move out of position to close off an opportunity. When we have that happen, we have some really good passers who can find an open guy for a high danger shot. We thrive on causing chaos (sorry) in the offensive zone, which is what has made our PP and offensive zone attack so frustrating to watch in recent years, especially in the playoffs when the guys just find their spots on the ice and pass station to station not forcing the defense to react.

I really hope Ghost is the catalyst that actively prevents us from falling back into that tendency. If we can do that and actually have an effective power play, this team could be primed for a sneaky playoff run. Thats a LOT to ask, though, especially when you're talking about the team suddenly not acting the way they have the past 5 years or so.
