Let me be perfectly clear. Only speaking for myself, I'm not trying to police any emotion or opinion you might have. You are free to believe whatever you want, you are free to post whatever you want. But you aren't entitled to not have your opinion or belief criticized. I feel like I've laid out the arguments and thought process behind my pessimism, and am only met with snideness and emotional arguments. In fact, a lot of it seems really bad faith...I know you as someone who's normally very good-faith and honest, but with others, it seems like they want to attack people's tone rather than the substance. In this thread, as much as he's doing it churlishly and arrogantly, Hodge's points are far better than the counterarguments being made.
I mean yea, because it's a lot more productive when everyone is making arguments in a clear-headed and polite manner. Usually we're pretty open to debate and open to having these discussions, but when someone comes in and makes certain arguments in a condescending way, of course there's going to be pushback that's not always related to the topic at hand. That's just how a forum like this (or really any discussion space, really) is going to operate.

This is the "he started it" defense and it's a slippery slope.

Of course, the additional problem is that on the internet it's easy to interpret tone in a tendentious way. I'm certainly not immune to that! I don't think I've been condescending (unless disagreement is de-facto being condescending), and to his credit Hodge has several times backed down and clarified when pushed on the actual points.

That's entirely fair, on all points. I just think that a lot of stuff is already draining outside of hockey, and having that negativity in a space where we're trying to just enjoy watching a sport and escape all that doesn't help that at all.

Fair enough, but then why engage and then escalate?

Like you, I am a Sharks fan. I watch almost every game (went to the games in Pittsburgh and Detroit this month), cheer for them, and am happy when they win. As I have said before, I cue up the Power Play on YouTube when I get home if I have had a bad day. It is the greatest moment (well, five minutes) in Sharks history.

I'm 64 and go back to the Cow Palace days when I had a partial season ticket and then through the 90s. I want to see the Sharks win a Cup before I die. (Fortunately, my doctor says I should live into my 90s.) I first became a hockey fan in the last year of the Original Six; I fully understand how hard it is to win the Cup because the playoffs are just so random. I just want to see the team try to build a team that could win a Cup sometime in the next two decades. I would be delighted to ride the emotional rollercoaster of watching a contender crash in the playoffs year after year and then finally win it all.

That means it is time for Doug Wilson to go and for the organization to clean house. Wilson is not a bad GM, but he has had two decades as GM and has not gotten the job done. Let's get someone who could build a contender. Again, no guarantees.

I have what I’m guessing is going to be an unpopular opinion: being a hockey fan is not fun if you think the only possible good outcome is winning a Stanley Cup. Trust me, I’ve been there.

You want realism? The Sharks are not going to win a Cup in the next ten years. I would bet serious money on it. Does that make me sad? Of course. Does that prevent me from enjoying the small victories? No. The small victories make me happy. A natural hat trick from Hertl in the last fifteen minutes of a game to force overtime and win. A historic five goal performance from Meier. A gorgeous no-look pass from Karlsson, or Burns sniping the corner. Merkley showing he’s a real NHLer against the odds. The idea that we have some solid prospects who might, maybe, be new San Jose Sharks one day. These things make me happy. There is too many people on this forum right now policing what can and cannot make people happy.

The Sharks are not going to win a Cup in the next decade. I’m going to enjoy watching them anyway.

Gushers and Spitserov (finally) with a goal
Robins with 2 goals and an assist

Based strictly on highlights, I think Robins game translates really well to the next level. Even though he’s an overager, he’s not really overly reliant if at all on his size and strength. His game looks to be more entered around just finding spots and sniping

The trick is going to be whether or not that shot translates to facing better goalies.

Balcers was a 50-goal sorer as a WHLer in his D+1 (age 18) season. Gregor was a 40-goal scorer as an over-ager and is not nearly the biggest or strongest guy out there. Blichfeld scored 50 goals in his over-age season and he's still a string-bean. Halbgewachs potted 50 as a 19 year old then 70 in his over-age season as an undersized, shifty player who got by on slick skating rather than strength.

Lots of players score big in their over-age WHL seasons even if they're not wrecking balls on skates. The test will be if he can beat pro goalies with those skills the way he can the average major junior one (because the average major junior goalie is going nowhere as a pro)

6 pts in 10 games for Eklund. Hopefully he's working on his body, getting stronger, cause he's barely been playing very many actual hockey games.

Watching North Bay vs. Barrie today cause I haven't seen much of Coe besides all the highlights.

Couple things I've noticed with him:

The bad:

He's cherry-picking a TON. It seems like they've created a lot of set plays where he just immediately takes off up ice after a faceoff win in their defensive zone. It's slightly worrisome though as he's just floating in the neutral zone while his team is on the boards. Now I think at this level it is probably giving his team the best chance to win just because of how good he is, but still not what I expected of his game.

The good:

When he gets that break out pass he's money. He beats defenders along the boards with speed or just out-muscling them. He's better than the majority of the players on the ice at controlling the puck and it shows. The team has a ton of confidence in him carrying the puck into the Ozone. His cross-ice pass is great, and he has a lot of touch with his passes. His shot is accurate and release is decent but could be a hair quicker. His size and speed though are really impressive.

Will keep watching and see his effort over the third as they're down 2-1 now on a great Cardwell pass.
