I can agree with a lot of what you said. I used to be a BPA person at the draft couple of years ago, but have learned it the hard way that there are a lot of things involved choosing a player.
Only time there is a clear BPA is when you draft 1st overall and you have a Crosby, McDavid, MacKinnon, Bedard or Celebrini type of talent.

That's definitely how I view it. Is the player good enough to dictate how you play? Ok then, pick them, get a coach who can make the most of them and build a supporting cast. Outside of that you've gotta determine if the player you pick is going to be successful in your organization.

I used to think it was a good idea to pick whoever is likely to end up most valuable, thinking you move them to fill needs but it really seems these days there is a big depreciation and you seldom get a player of the same caliber back.

I absolutely agree that fit matters. I feel chanting "BPA" expresses a special kind of naivety. It's the kind of statement that's hard to disagree with but at the same time it means almost nothing. There's not some master spreadsheet somewhere to sort by rating and just take the top rated player. A players success is absolutely related to their fit on a team. Very few players will become successful in any environment, everyone else you're trying to match strengths with needs and trying to determine what weaknesses you can live with or shore up.

To be clear, I do think trying to project a players fit in a lineup down the road is not the best approach. Ideally a strong system has multiple options for roles and isn't turning away talent because "we already have our top line LW prospect". Like we really need RD prospects but if our options are between a potential top 6 winger and a below replacement RD then you should probably take the player you wouldn't get fired for icing.

The approach I have always taken when drafting at the NHL level (something that has not and will not ever happen) is which player do we think is going to have success playing the way we want to play? There's your BPA.

Your last sentence really says it all. Who will succeed the most in the system you're trying to create? That's who you take.

That's how Vegas seems to have drafted. I believe only Brisson of their 1st round picks is playing for organization.

Next year is going to be so important for him. Can he get his legs strong and adjust to pro hockey? If so, then he'll be a guy. Pretty much all of his problems are from gliding in the defensive zone (Musty's fault) and weird defensive schemes (Sudbury's fault).

Anecdotally, I don't feel like the bridges were mended in Sudbury. I genuinely feel like his teammates don't pass to him when they should at times.

Anyway, sounds like Chernyshov is up next in this video series, can't wait for that one.

The team doesn't appear to be cheating for offense like they were last year, so I don't know how much of a mess it is this year. The injury hasn't helped.

Hopefully, playing against men next year will light a fire under him not to coast as much on defense.

He also wasn't moving his feet or making smart plays in the preseason. Hopefully, he can change that part of his game, and it's more about the system he is in and not his innate playstyle.

Yeah but it’s a bad situation. He didn’t report, his teammates probably don’t love him, he’s playing in a league he’s dominant in… I want him playing against men in the AHL and learning how to succeed there. This season feels a little wasted to me for him.

Some of that stuff is his own fault though. I agree that it's kinda a wasted season, but it's almost the same wasted season that Chernyshov is having. And admittedly, it's not an apples to apples situation. Chernyshov is playing with more talent. But you can still make the best of it and work hard in the areas you need to.
