Prospect Info: Sharks Prospect Info & Discussion Megathread XXI: "New, improved, and wayyyy too much info" Edition

Colton Roberts was a -2 with no points tonight as the Giants lost handily to Portland 5-2. The whole Giants team looked like ass for the bulk of the game as they were easily outplayed, but in the 3rd period they finally started getting some PP time after questionable reffing through 2 periods and with the team missing arguably its 2nd best d-man overall and unarguably its 2nd best offensive d-man in 16 year old Ryan Lin, Roberts stepped up and QB'd the power play and actually looked pretty decent at it.

He's not making the pros to be an offensive d-man, but the emergence of Lin had pushed him down the depth chart and taken away his PP time, so it was nice to see he still has that skillset available. His biggest obstacle to improvement now (besides just getting to play meaningful situations as long as undrafted 19yo Mazden Leslie and Lin are the set-in-stone #1 pair) is to clean up his d-zone decision making and start being a little more forceful at shutting guys down especially once play gets deep into the zone.

Igor with a 5 pt night against Guelph ina 10-7 win. 2 more goals and still needs some more conditioning. You have a hell of a player there and his size with all his other attributes WOW
Mad I missed this one. I was going to watch and then... I fell asleep.

Saginaw doesn't clip their goals on twitter, which is annoying. Found a clip of all his points on the OHL account.

Dude is a very underrated playmaker.

Dude looks like he's dunking on kids. Man this really makes we want Misa even more too!

I could see Grier liking Martone over Hagens, maybe.
I could too, and frankly I wouldn't be mad about it. Hagens is probably better in a vacuum but when you consider fit it's not so clear. And I believe fit matters.

On another note, I haven't seen in mentioned over here but Cam Allen, who was Dickinson's sometimes-partner in London over the last few weeks since Allen was traded there, was arrested for DUI, crashing into another vehicle, and fleeing the scene of the crash, which injured someone. Terrible look for Allen, especially given the tragedy this summer. Can only hope Sam wasn't remotely involved.

Chernyshov with 2.8 points per game pace (probably will get lower but you never know)
Musty with 1.59
Dickinson with 1.55
And Halttunen with 1,05 but clearly working on getting assists

I'm very certain at least one of the forwards and Dickinson will feast under Celebrini kingdom.
Hopefully all of them hit so we can enjoy the fruit of Sharks scouting work and drafting luck.

I absolutely agree that fit matters. I feel chanting "BPA" expresses a special kind of naivety. It's the kind of statement that's hard to disagree with but at the same time it means almost nothing. There's not some master spreadsheet somewhere to sort by rating and just take the top rated player. A players success is absolutely related to their fit on a team. Very few players will become successful in any environment, everyone else you're trying to match strengths with needs and trying to determine what weaknesses you can live with or shore up.

To be clear, I do think trying to project a players fit in a lineup down the road is not the best approach. Ideally a strong system has multiple options for roles and isn't turning away talent because "we already have our top line LW prospect". Like we really need RD prospects but if our options are between a potential top 6 winger and a below replacement RD then you should probably take the player you wouldn't get fired for icing.

The approach I have always taken when drafting at the NHL level (something that has not and will not ever happen) is which player do we think is going to have success playing the way we want to play? There's your BPA.

I can agree with a lot of what you said. I used to be a BPA person at the draft couple of years ago, but have learned it the hard way that there are a lot of things involved choosing a player.
Only time there is a clear BPA is when you draft 1st overall and you have a Crosby, McDavid, MacKinnon, Bedard or Celebrini type of talent.
