I feel like this is definitely true; Musty has gotten away with playing a certain game and style throughout his career so far, one which leads to a certain level of success at the time, but one that probably won't be entirely transferrable once he tries to make it in the big show. It's sort of an unfortunate aspect of the way things are now for kids, but alas, it is what it is.

I'm not going to write his obituary for that just yet. Let's get him to the f***ing pro game first and see how he adapts to that. He'll be just a little over 20 years old once he gets to the Barracuda in October. There's a ton of potential there and, while a lot of it is unrealized, or a lot of his game leaves you wanting, I don't get how some people are so quick to write him off when you look at the combination of skill and size and take into account the context of how he's been able to succeed up to this point in his career.

From the little bit I've seen, the physicality of junior hockey appears to be almost non-existent across the board.

He’s insanely skilled and has a good work ethic, drive, etc. He needs to be challenged. Playing in the AHL with guys like Clowe, etc. to advise him will go a long way, I think. I actually think he’s going to be a really good player — he just also happens to be one of our most tradeable assets and I’d give him up to get help on D.

If they can get him on the Will Smith arc and get him to work a little harder off the puck, I think he can be a Top 6 winger. In fact, given that neither guy is exactly Pavel Bure, they could be a good fit for each other. But they have to work harder in their own zone and work to become the best skaters they are capable of being.

I know we've all talked about it ad nauseum but watching clips of Askarov at the All-Star game -- I just love his personality. If he blossoms into his potential, he's going to be Joe Thornton-level beloved here, he's such a fun kid to watch.

Could be but I think it's only if he wins it for the team. Goalies are often the first ones scapegoated when things go south. It's hard seeing any goalie override that. As much as Nabokov is loved at this point with time passing, he was hated during his run as our goalie by a significant portion of the fan base. Certainly moreso than Thornton ever was but I think it's due to the positions they each play rather than their personality.

You might be right. Still, I love that the new generation of kids is continuing the tradition that Burns and Joe set — I like that our team has the oddballs.

I do too. Askarov makes the games fun when he's in there. Nabokov did for me as well. I'm hoping with more youth set to turn pro for us that we see more of them. The forwards need a Clowey-like personality in that group and the defensemen need someone like Murray who had an entertaining swagger to their games while being great on-ice teammates. We need more skaters that pull the team into the fight.
