Never really felt like DW and the Sharks org put as much money or effort into developing youth hockey in the region like the other sunbelt teams did.
First I will say it is not on DW or the NHL GM to develop youth hockey.

Second there is a completely different side of the story related to local youth hockey that obviously wasn’t in the story about Marleau but doesn’t need to be told.

The Sharks have a strong youth hockey organization that is very similar to what was described in the article but has a bigger overall mission and can’t cater to a single player, team, or parent.

What's Florida's track record with developing NHL players? I know that the Hughes brothers are from there, but IIRC they grew up in Toronto (similarly, Auston Matthews was born in California but grew up in Phoenix).

I've seen it mentioned that Gostisbehere is a product of the Florida system, and of course, Ryan Carpenter is from Florida.

California has Martinez, Robertson(s)-ish, Demko, Trevor Moore, and Nieto...but save for Martinez, those are all from Southern California. Matt Tennyson is still in the league...

I’m sorry, but I’m not picking up this obvious other side, would someone like to elaborate for me?

I actually thnk the story of youth hockey in nothern california is something that should be told......Id like to see a story of its success, which there is a lot of and its gaps, which it clearly has.
