There are still guys out there who are cheaper and better than Vanecek, though. If I'm Vancouver, I'd much rather sign Kevin Lankinen or even Martin Jones to league minimum than take on Vanecek's contract for the whole year.

Sure but maybe it can be part of something bigger. They've been considering trading Garland for a while now.

They might have just wanted another goalie. They did say they wanted to go into the season with five under contract - given the injury concerns Blackwood and Vanacek have, plus now Askarov, having a mediocre tweener goalie like Dell in the system isn't a bad idea.

It’s a LBI and with his style that’s not a good sign imo
