I like a Cagnoni - Desharnais pairing — Desharnais can throw the puck and Cagnoni out of the zone at the same time.

He's a bit overpaid for a guy who's not exactly an established NHLer. I'm sure the Oilers would have kept him if he was willing to sign for something like the contract they gave Josh Brown. Wasn't living up to the contract in Vancouver who needed to clear his cap for next year before extending Marcus Pettersson. Looks like Pittsburgh was opening up a spot for Luke Schenn.

Because he sucks but if he's terrible but 3rd pairing caliber-ish enough to help a kid develop, we can make it work and maybe get that 5th back if we rent him out.

It seems like Edmonton liked him well enough, even playing him 16 times in the playoffs last season, but they were pinching pennies everywhere they could, so I get why they looked for cheaper options; he's always going to be someone easily replaceable on the surface.

It is disconcerting that he did poorly enough in Vancouver that they were over him after 2+ months, but Pittsburgh dealing him means nothing to me since they're just doing whatever these days.

I'd say my main concern is simply the space he'll occupy on the roster. I just want us to do better, though I acknowledge how that could be challenging on the right side heading into next season. I suppose the fact that the base salary is low and he could be waived to the Barracuda easily to start next season (after giving him a shot in the NHL this season) to give them depth helps.

I feel a little bad for Jack Thompson in all of this. Is he really worse than Desharnais? I guess the objective of bolstering the PK is important enough. And maybe this gets us one step closer to actually buying out Vlasic this summer. That would sort of help the overall cause (in terms of having too many bottom-pairing D heading into next season).

Vancouver did seek him out on July 1 this past year though as a UFA.

The other point is that I don't think anyone would confuse Dubas/Allvin as the brightest GMs in the league when it comes to asset management.

I think it's a prudent move and gives us some flexibility to acquire a variety of RHD this offseason. Without a bigger body like this, I don't think you go out and get someone that is in the Fabbro/Liljegren size range. Now, you have some options.

Ferraro-Muk are both lefties. Could be a deal that gets Muk back on his natural side. That said, the fact that we'd tried to acquire him with a Ceci deal says that he's just a player that Grier likes more than anything.

As soon as this trade happened, I told myself to check out HF Sharks to see the bedwetting over a 5th round pick on a rebuilding team in need of bodies.

I must say, it lived up to expectations.

I believe there was only 1 true bedwetter talking about the 5th round pick, in our defense.
 
This trade is another Blah. I get the size desire. Thats what both this one and giles are all about. adding size.

However, rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic is just that. Ruuta into Desharnais. Blah.

The sharks need to add TALENT to go with size. So far, nothing.
