Do we think that Shane thinks he's too good for the OHL?
There was talk last year that his play had trailed off because he was "bored" with junior and felt he had nothing to prove at that level. I can't say if that was all media or what exactly it was based on, but that was the talk and his play had dropped off and he did look less than interested at times.
Now I'm thinking maybe he was not so much bored because of his skill level but bored because he lacks the desire. He needs a reset imo.

He started slow and heated up as the season went on. If he was bored wouldn't you expect it to be the other way around?

Such a complete performance from Wright. His takeaways the past few games have been at an elite level.

Great for him and happy birthday as well.

Let's see what the Kraken decide now.
No matter what, it is, it has to be him playing games consistantly.

I have a hard time believing that there is a lot of ice time available to Shane with the Kraken at this time. I don't know who would be taken out of the lineup for him. It looked to me like he still needs a lot of playing time. Obviously he can score but more work on his all around game needs minutes. Unfortunately he is limited on options for him to get those minutes.

Having watched all the games live I really like Shane Wright. The details on his defensive game are so far above what you normally see in a teenager. His playmaking skills were very impressive too. If he does go back to junior all it has to offer him is a chance to run up the score against inferior competition. He really belongs in the AHL if there isn't ice time for him in Seattle.

If we don't send him to the OHL do we have to move down or cut someone from the NHL roster? Or was he given a roster exemption due to the WJC? Still feel sending him to an OHL contender till the end of season may be best, if only from a confidence aspect and guaranteed playing time.

I don't think there is enough ice time right now either. Shane needs to earn these minutes than just get handed them over. Our bottom-6 is a mix of Tanev, Gourde, Bjorkstrand, Tolvanen, Geekie, Sprong and Donato. That is a hard group to break into. Plus if Donskoi ever returns from injury things could get even harder.

That has been the dilemma from the very start. A lot of us feel that juniors may not have much to offer BUT he is not AHL-eligible because of his age. And if he is going to only play 1 in every 4 games in the NHL for under 10 min/game, it may just be better to play 20+ minutes in juniors.

A lot of people only look at the box scores.

Personally, having watched a bit of this IIHF U20 tourney, I saw this player in good defensive positions, winning puck battles, and skating it out or otherwise making good transition plays.

He doesn't seem like a prolific scorer (a la Zegras) nor really dominant in one area, but in a U20 tournament which is typically full of errors he stood out as a very solid and mature player. A great choice for the 'C' for Canada. That comes with a lot of pressure and responsibility.

I am not 100% sure. Based on capfriendly our roster is at 22/23 because of Driedger and Donskoi injuries. Wright would make it 23/23 so maybe it is fine. I am not a roster expert though so someone else may need to clarify.

That's baloney. Shane is still at an early stage in his development when it comes to protecting the puck, challenging defenders, and finding ways to extend plays. Practice against junior competition is perhaps what he needs to the most. I would love to see him learn how to run up the score, it will give him tools he can adapt to the NHL someday. Expecting him to try things for the first time vs NHL comp is unrealistic. We'd be setting him up to be a very conservative player. Wennberg with a shot.

A mistake. But whatever. All i see it is delaying the adjustment he needs to get better against NHLers. He won't get that in the OHL. With that said i am bowing out of this thread.

This is exactly my concern too. His goal in the WJC final shows that he has the creativity and can use his skill when he wants to. I think he just plays it too safe and needs to build confidence so that he can do that at the AHL + NHL level and not just rely on his shot.

Who do you want to bench on our team so that Wright gets minutes? This team has 13 forwards on the roster right now and is in a race for a playoff spot.

And we all know that he CANNOT play in the AHL. The OHL may not be what we all want but it is the best way to get him playing time and work on refining his skills further.

Will Kingston try trade him to a contender? I thought we had concerns about the way Kingston were developing him? Not opposed to moving him down but as long as he is going to learn and not go back to old habits at his old team.

Alright. Really hope that he gets traded. Glad we no longer need to think about this or discuss scenarios. We know the score. I feel as though this was all part of the plan. At least I hope it is.

He got some NHL training under his belt, got his first NHL goal and assist, made around $375,000, won a gold medal and now may get to try and get a memorial cup. To be honest, if anybody thinks that’s not a great year for an 18 year old they are completely out to lunch. I’m sure he’s loving this… unless he doesn’t get traded… then the last one isn’t a possibility.

Sounds pretty likely that he will be traded. Multiple sources have reported that already.
