The Cuban missile crisis was pretty serious also. I think sports shouldn't make political decisions. The Russians weren't banned when they were razing Grozny and Syrian cities into the ground during that time either. So have at it. This invasion of Ukraine is far more dangerous geopolitically. The Russian government is actually thinking of using nuclear weapons there now. And they shouldn't be banned? Lol

It was fine for America to participate while segregation was still the law a decade or so prior to South Africa's non admittance to the games. Fine when they invaded Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq etc etc. They should have allowed South Africa to attend the Olympics with their all-white slate of athletes?
Because the administration in charge back then managed to convince that the invasion was justified. And that also highlights the difference to Russia, administrations actually change in the US every 4 - 8 years. Complete reversal of policies is possible. Not so much in Russia. To claim otherwise is just political whataboutism and not really the thread topic. Why aren't more countries / organizations banned then?
Qatar is hosting the biggest sporting event in the world and has a horrendous human rights record.
Why wasn't USA banned in the 2000s?
There's so many countries and clubs that do terrible things and yet it seems almost unthinkable to ban them but yet we are fine with banning Russians who many live in North America with us and have nothing to do with the insanity of Putin.

That must mean he was treated well in America along with other black people. That changes everything and makes Americas segregation and invasions palatable to me now /s.I seem to recall Jesse Owens participating on the US Olympic team.
In South Africa, no black athletes were permitted to compete.
Not true in practice, not even in theory really.Because the administration in charge back then managed to convince that the invasion was justified. Doesn't change the fact that maybe America should have been at times for similar transgressions as other nations have and are currently.
The Russian Hockey Federation and their cronies lobbied and voted for policies in favor of the military invasion of Ukraine. They were directly involved with laying the groundwork for Putins invasion, and they are still endorsing what the Russian military is doing over there (the Russian military is notorious for raping innocent civillians en masse in all of their wars btw). Idk how many times this needs to be explained to Kremlin sympathizers on here.
The Hockey Canada situation is not the same. Either the cronies step down and the organization is dissolved and Canada isn't banned, or they don't and Canada is banned until the cronies step down and the organization is dissolved. All the politicians, provincial hockey federations and company sponsors dont endorse rape and sexual assault it seems, and are withdrawing support from everything and demanding the cronies to step down. It's not even remotely the same thing. It seems everyone is in agreement to destroy this toxic rape culture allowed by Hockey Canada and want to do everything to destroy it.
The Russians and Belarusians are banned and will stay banned until every single invader is off Ukrainian land and they pay reparations. Until then they can stay banned and can kick rocks for all I care. If it takes banning Canada to get them to see the bigger picture so be it. Stop trying to compare the two.
