Probably because serious contenders don't do stupid shit in net, most of them get a legit starter and spend a few bucks there.

The only reason Vancouver was even looking at Lankinen is because Demko has been suffering from some kind of freak injury, not because that was ever plan A.

Yep most teams go out and get a guy that they think can take them all the way or take a risk on an internal guy who they think can do the same.

Personally my opinion is Skinner could have been the guy. However the pandemic rushed his development and allowed Holland to make a decision to appoint a 23 year old as the goalie of the future rather than breaking him in slowly.

Personally, we should’ve been in on Ullmark when Smith’s contract ended in 2021. But we decided to do another year of him rather than solidifying that position for the future.

The mistake that Soundwave is making is the same mistake that Oilers management has made for years: Always thinking the top picks were auto-win buttons. Ovi had to wait 12 years to get a Cup. It took MacKinnon 8 years to win a Cup. Matthews will probably never get one in Toronto.
MacK only gets his if they draft a generational defenceman too: Ovi won his in a year where everything clicked on that Caps team and they were the best team in the league. Everything has to click, lots of variables go into wins and losses and that magnified when talking about cup wins or losses.

At the end of the day, the Oilers have as good a chance as any, which is why they went to the Cup finals last year and which is why they are again the odds on favourite to win it this year. I’m happy with that. Expecting more or expecting a garantee to be possible isn’t realistic.

Very true, MacKinnon's career was alright but nothing amazing before Makar arrived. Ovi had everything go right for him. So did the Blues the following year. Vegas faced three chumps in their Cup win.

lol @ all the people proselytizing for Skinner when he lets not one but two goals in off the back of his head….😆
Apparently a goal let in from behind the red line is ok. Perfect shot. He did the same against VAN in the playoffs lol. Above him and through his 5 hole from close to the red line

Nevermind just standing up and hugging that post so it is IMPOSSIBLE to score from there. Like literally impossible.

McDavid would have a Cup if the Oilers got to shoot on Osgood like the Pens did lol

Pittsburgh's goaltending was massive in all their Cup wins, go look at the save percentages in manner of their do or die games for all their Cup wins.

2009 Cup Finals, Pittsburgh is down 2-3 and on the brink of defeat, MAF pulls .962 and .958 in game 6 and 7, giving up only 1 goal each in those two games, unbelievable. Pens win 2-1 both games and win the Cup with Crosby and Malkin scoring nothing in game 6 and 7.

2016 Cup run, Conference Finals game 7 vs Tampa, guess which score the Penguins win by? 2-1. Crosby and Malkin scoreless. Matt Murray puts on a clinic with a .941 save percentage, shutting down Tampa's vaunted offense.

2017 Cup run, Pittsburgh beats Washington game 7, 2-0, no goals for Crosby or Malkin again. MAF shuts out the Caps. game 7 of the ECF vs Ottawa they win 3-2 in double over time, Crosby and Malkin again with no goals, Matt Murray with a .931 save percentage.

Tell me again how many Cups you think Crosby has with Skinner in net, because they would lose all 3 of their Cups with Skinner level goaltending.

Their 10 million dollar man came up big
Our 8.5 million and 12.5 million dollar players managed 0 goals in the final 2 games and 0 points in Game 7
Goaltending can be the trump position in hockey. Especially in deciding games. All other things being roughly equal you want at least quality in net. Not like the Oilers don't spend on the goalie file either given the Campbell buyout. The org has just shit the bed on the goalie file giving the team the weakest goaltending of any contender. Colorado next in running and that team isn't confident either with their goaltending presently. Somehow losing to Nucks as a write this.

SOme people don't remember how much COL fans ragged on Mack

Mack looked like a whatever player for years and bloomed later. He did get lucky to get Makar, that's for sure.

Actually the pattern is the last 3 Cup winners all signed or acquired their starting goalie that won them the Cup.

You convienantly don't want to list that. We would have won the Cup in 2006 too if Roloson didn't get hurt and we sure as f*** didn't draft him.

AND YOU conveniently didn’t mention that outside of Vegas all 3 were acquired IN THE OFFSEASON OR EARLIER.

YOU ARE ASKING FOR A MIDSEASON TRADE

THERE IS NO ROLOSON TYPE GOALIE AVAILABLE

Man I’m beginning to believe what I see online that most people don’t read above a 6th grade level.

He doesn't have the athleticism. That simply puts a roof on his ceiling, it's like expecting Bedard to be as good as McDavid, it's not that he doesn't want to, he just doesn't have the size or speed.

Mikko Koskinen is a way better athlete than Skinner so was Ben Scrivens. Skinner is one of the most unathletic starters the Oilers have ever had. You might have to go back to like Ty Conklin as a comparable athletically.

So Malkin and Crosby are chokers like McDavid and Drai I guess, Nevermind that McDavid breaks a GREZTKY assist record.

People would rather defend the sieve goalie here about game 7 over McDavid/Drai and shit talk these 2 after what they did all playoffs.

It's honestly batshit insane

Watching Skinner and his athleticism, etc, you have to be clinically insane to be happy going forward with him as an emotionally invested fan. Or just straight up delusional.

He does in this town

The standards here are that the D must play picture perfect and be top 5 every game. Goalie is never at fault.

I would say out of every 10 games played, Skinner fans are happy if he gets 900 in half of them.
Its interesting that even Ekholm was being called out by several posters today. The Viking that has come in here and given years of stalwart play and he has one off game and getting the gears. Skinner has 20 despicable games a season and several more in the playoffs and being defended by some in same game. Unreal.

See thats the difference. I don't blame McD, Drai, Ekholm, Hyman because they carry the team every year endlessly. I blame the player that is clearly worst at his position and has been now for 3yrs. I also blame Schwartz for defending this crap and the org trusting his goalie takes. lol

I’ll let @Drivesaitl take this hahaha

I feel like debating Kosko over Stu in terms of athleticism is like comparing an aircraft carrier and a cruise ship in terms of speed.
