I can understand that view philosophically, but I don't think that stance is beneficial to reaching a deal.If Jones isn’t really worth his AAV, it should be on Chicago to retain and it shouldn’t cost the acquiring team anything to retain. It should not be a default to pay for retention when the acquiring team didn’t make the mistake on the contract.
If the acquisition cost is ultimately low enough (mid pics and prospects) I believe a deal could be made. There's certainly a fair amount of risk with Jones's contract for the buyer, so that would drive the price down IMO.
