This could be an off-season move for Carolina. They have Orlov and Burns coming off the books after this season so that is like $13.5m in space.

Canes aren't taking Jones at the full salary but at $2-2.5 retained there's a deal to be made.

Slavin - Chatfield
Nikishin - Jones
Ghost - Walker

Obviously would have to see what happens with Burns and Orlov but the fit and money could be there.

We'll see but I think if he requests a trade there will be a market in the 6.5-7.5 range.
he will be 31-36 yrs old the last 5 yrs of the contract.

I expect him to be garbage the last 2-3 yrs of that contract

A team thus yesr drafts a LD in the 1st round, you can rationalize it by having Jones paired with the prospect the lsst 3 yrs,/ prospects ELC years

Eating 2-3 mil for 5 seasons would make me expect a somewhat decent return. Full tilt you can have him for free. Low term salary back would be fine too.

Not sure if the Habs would do this but lets gauge the parts required.

What would the Hawks say if there was no retention and Gallagher went the other way? Jones has 5 more years at a higher cap hit while Gallagher has 2 more years left. What else do you ask for? This would save the Hawks a little cap space for 2 years and then a lot after that.

Hard to know how Jones would be mixed in a better top 4D. He looked solid with Werenski back when.

Problem here would be Jones NMC

I would not mind seeing Jones on Vancouvers second pair, less pressure on him. I do not know what the cost would be and if there would be retention on Chicago's part. Canucks and Blackhawks have made a few trades the past couple of years, you never know.

Definitely a lose lose trade between Chicago and Columbus on this trade though. Cole Sillinger is a nice piece but Columbus has already traded Jiricek and Bokvist did not pan out.

Hawks ended up with 1st and 6th in deal that look promising

Nolan Allan (The 1st rounder) is looking good for us as rookie here (Been up with team since winning roster spot in camp) and establishing himself as a stable young SAH defender who hasn't looked out of place at all at NHL level

The 6th round pick is C Dominic James who has been solid/productive player for U of Minnesota-Duluth and is likely a prospect Hawks look to sign to ELC at conclusion of NCAA season

Absolutely zero interest in that contract from a Red Wings perspective. I'd probably need at least 3 million retained before I'd start to be interested.

That said, Jones is still a legit player.

Nice pieces and some potential I admit but the main pieces on either side have been underwhelming. Probably Allan for you and on Columbus side is Sillinger.

He's getting boo'd at home while touching the puck. That NMC will be moot here soon enough.

He makes $9.5M and lives in one of two cities he wanted to go to

Being boo'd is hardly going to make him desire to uproot his life in new city unless its the other city he wanted to go to and they have no reason to acquire him

He isn't going to make any less in any other city and getting boo'd at home is pretty miserable lol. Imagine sitting at your desk and getting boo'd when you type. I'd get sick of it too.

Feels like he will end up on one of the Florida teams, or maybe Vegas, likely at 50% retention and then revert back to the stud he was in his mid 20s

Longest term left on a 50% retention was recently Hayes by PHI to STL for 3 years. 50% is pretty much just for the remainder the season at TDL, 1 year, or 2 years (RyJo).

Very rare to get that high retention on a deal that goes that long. Burns was like 30% or something for 3 years by SJ to CAR. The others like EK, Kessel, Luongo, who had that kind of term was closer to 15%.

Might not be 50%, but likely would need some retention plus taking back a contract. Unlikely to get a contract going the other for 5 years, but probably 2-3 years.

Would never happen, but I believe he and the Blackhawks could technically mutually agree to terminate his contract and he'd become a UFA.

That said, I think there's probably a buyer or two interested if Chicago eats ~2.000. That's a lot more realistic.
Any team and player could do that but the player never would. It’s the only way the Flames would get out of Huberdeau’s contract

...perhaps my use of "better" wasn't the proper term; "more valuable" fits...for all his shortcomings, Jones is still a Top Pairing offensively-minded RD; a far more valuable commodity in most NHL markets than a physically imposing 2nd Pairing LD who doesn't really stand out on either side of the puck...while there's no question that Nurse is far better both physically & defensively, he's still not a great defender, imo...

I know people don't watch too many Hawks games, but good lord is Jones shockingly bad when you watch him. I would rather pay him $2M to play for some other team than pay him $7.5M to play for mine.
