Speculation: Seth Jones says he's talking with the Blackhawks about the possibility of a trade

How much would the Hawks have to retain for :

1- a team to take him for free?
2- a team to pay a late 1st for him?

I think there's too much term/money left for them to buy him out.

Another option could be to take a bad contract back. But, I don't see many contracts as bad out there...

The Hawks will not retain on Jones just to give him away for no return, he is still a very useful player despite what the either uneducated or biased fan thinks. So no team will “take him for fee” because that is not an option.

iF the Hawks retain more than $1m per season, the return to Chicago will greater than a 1st round pick. Again, Jones is a big, mobile, RHD who plays 25+ minutes a game in all situations. Those players are difficult to find and have value.

I don't know - I am kind of tired of these athletes like Jones who, in this case is being overpaid, complain about their teams. I don't recall hearing this at all when I was a kid - players kept their opinions to themselves and / or kept it within the team. I don't know if it's social media or ungrateful overpaid athletes, but it seems in many sports, we see this type of thing - public dissatisfaction with how a team is managing a rebuild, losing patience and then demanding a trade. This seems to happen quite often in the NBA and NFL.

If I was another team I would take a long hard look at what I am getting. There are players who play on just awful teams through thick and thin, and work to improve the team through their play and contributions rather than demand a trade, discuss a trade, etc. Jones had promise at one point a long time ago - I think his play has regressed, but it's his attitude that would make me, if I was a GM, reconsider whether the juice is worth the squeeze.

I identify with this. The Hawks were willing to step up and sign him to this albatross of a deal and they will rightly want a return. Problem is that his cap hit is tough to digest and the pro scouts watching his lack of engagement, won't have glowing reports.

This is not a guy I would want to go to war with but as long as he's not counted on for too much, he could help some teams.

I disagree. Jones didn´t expect to come in a situation like this four years ago. I truly understand him. He could´ve just enjoyed his money and keep playing meaningless games but he wants to compete. He is a pro who likes to compete and doesn´t like to loose all the time. And I understand him a lot because I complain about the Hawks all the time too. For a reason.

They were a lotto team for each of the 2yrs prior to his arrival. And Kane and Toews weren't getting any younger. Keith was gone, Was pretty obvious that the Hawks were on the way down before the trade

Just IMO - but with the cap increases that the NHL announced SJ's contract is going to be reasonable to the "market". He's obviously overpaid now, because while he's a legit top pair guy, he's definitely not elite. I expect the elite guys are going to easily be making $13+M if they're signing long term given the cap increases expected.

surely they were able to successfully re-tool around a young core that included alex debrincat, dylan strome, brandon hagel and kevin lankinen right?

- Signed Jake McCabe as FA

Getting back to promising youth falling flat Lankinen had a good rookie year and Fleury/Lankinen was looked at as a top potential duo going into season

This....Davidson came in and tore it down to the studs in a complete rebuild which you can argue the Hawks could have been a fringe playoff team had they kept what the sold of for mostly picks or contract dump vets at best. Despite what the past 3 seasons have brought...I think the tear down was the correct move as opposed to being in the purgatory of mediocrity which is all that would have happened by keeping the band together. In the end none of what was moved out is much more than pretty good players and really hard to call any truely elite which at some point you need a few elite guys to actually win a playoff series.

Even with 1M retain he is vastly overpaid for his play the past 2.5 seasons. You would have to take a bad contract coming back on top. I'd be surprised if he brings back anything more than a late first.

He's recent media apparence is not going to help the Hawks get max value. He's essentially publicly asking to gtfo of there asap. They are certainly not going to keep him either with that kind of attitude ...
