Post-Game Talk: Server migration = loss

Honestly had a bad feeling before this one, and it was cemented when I saw this lol

The team was absolute garbage in the 1st yet the game was decided in the 1st even though Pittsburgh was under siege in the 2nd and 3rd periods. I don't care if you are a Skinner booster or detractor, he is a very hot and cold goalie and when he is cold he is borderline unplayable for that game. We need another option in net in case he goes cold when it matters most.

Don’t really want to make much out of this one. This type of game was bound to happen. Hopefully they rebound against Chicago.

The Blackhawk game is a tell for me in a bunch of ways:

We traditionally play a brand of Oiler half cocked hockey in Chicago since the Blackhawks have sucked (a la Montreal and Columbus the last few years)

This year we have basically decided to no show in games against bad teams.

Our worst traits as a team all showed up in this one after arguably the best game of the year.

If we dick around to start that game - we’ve decided to do it again because we don’t respect the opponent. If we run through them like we should with even a moderate effort, maybe the team learned that games don’t exist where you can half cock it and win.

Something hilarious about Stuart Skinner spending about 2 months trying to slowly bring his averages up to even barely above league average and then one game later and they’re back below .900 lol.

But in all honesty these ones happen. Horrendous 1st period from the team. Can’t be giving up the looks they did. Rest of the game doesn’t matter, this one was over once it was 4-0.

Its one of my biggest complaints about the team. We just never seem to impose our will on teams. Feels like were always just dipping our toes in the water. Then when we get up ahead, we tend to take our foot off the gas.

VGK is getting pounded by the Isles.

Seems like it might have been play like an idiot day.

Nothing lost. Nothing gained.

Skinner goes from a 'shutout' (he deserved it...but it doesn't count) to being mediocre.

This crazy roller coaster lack of consistency is what his detractors are most worried about.

Penguins are not good, they need to upgrade backup so Knob doesn't act like a knob and actually changes the goalie when Stu shits the bed and isn't overplayed to begin with

Third line was an exercise in futility.

Bouchard’s effort seems stuck on outdoor rink shinny level. It is just completely mind boggling. He is the cowardly lion, no heart.

Man Bouchard really needs to stop overthinking and fumbling the puck. All you have to do is apply a little pressure and he bobbles it.
The play with about 35 seconds left in the game made me scream at my TV. Coming out of the timeout, Drai wins the face off about as clean as possible to him in an absolutely prime shooting position but instead of ripping it he just skates back towards the blue line and then tosses a pass back towards Drai in the corner that gets picked off by Crosby and sent down the ice. You’re down two inside a minute, shoot the damn puck!!!

This season our offense has been pedestrian but the team has been elite at suppressing high value scoring chances. I think these things are correlated to the fact if we are not suppressing at an elite level we are sunk within 15 mins lol

I don't get it. We gave given parkatti a voice in management yet are fine running one of the worst statistical goalies over the last two years? And it's compounded by the anomaly of Pickard, who looks about the same as Skinner, and might have developing into a solid NHLer at 30, or not.

Blackwood is at .940 with Colorado at just over two million

Maybe he is quite consistent, and goes from passable when the oilers are on, to exposed when they aren't.

Statistically we have have been with Vegas this year, and Dallas last year, but how better would our stats be with Oetinger or Hill? We have to acquire a 1B to really know imo, even if people still believe in skinner

This team's style is still to get the puck low to high, take a point shot, and hope traffic in front of the net can get a deflection or reboard. Unfortunately with Kane out, the Oil really only have Hyman who excels in and around the net, and even he's been far more ineffective there this year vs. last.

Despite leading the lead in shots, they don't really drive the slot. Instead their focus is shots from the outside and swarming the crease.

This works when you have Hyman, Kane, and Perry, plus secondary pieces like Foegele, Holloway, and Henrique across the top 9 who are all good at crashing the net. But this year Kane is out and the rest of the top 9 is smaller. Mix in a complete lack of physical play, and the Oil are super easy to box out.

I wish McCurdy had a % of team shots taken from location vs. purely absolute. I'd wager that one would have the Oilers offensive slot as ice-cold. (The Oil are possession beasts, so off that they generate more shot attempts in general, even if they're not particularly focused on getting the puck to that area. Going by % would control for that).

TLDR; For the offence the Oil want to play, they need Kane back and one more bigger body (Philp?).

Like it or not, Skinner is getting the benefit of the doubt after the cup run last year.

New management group is focused on upgrading the defense and making another run with mostly the same core. They aren't changing out the goaltender right now short of a high profile elite goaltender becoming available and dropping into their laps.

If Skinner falters in the post season this year, we might see a real move to change the look there in the offseason

I really wish they'd move away from the Skinner-Henrique combo.

Sure you can get some bursts of offence out of them, but the problem is if they're not scoring then they're bringing absolutely to the game. It's the definition of empty-calorie hockey.

Janmark-Henrique-Brown at least makes the opposition work and tires them out, setting the stage for McDrai to have easier shifts later in the game. On the other hand, Skinner-Henrique doesn't force anyone to even raise their heart rate.

This is my biggest concern with Skinner. You just don't know when he might implode.

Team outside of Draisatl sucked. Pens content to let Bouchard take unscreened limpdick wristers from the point all day long. That 6-on-5 was downright pitiful. McDavid with some nice assists but I want to see him be more assertive with the opportunities he's given too.

Also this team really struggles to score outside McDrai. Like REALLY struggles.
Hence why I have the unpopular opinion of add a forward. Someone who can score like Nelson. It would help so much.

The Penguins did come to play though. Their effort levels were insane. Great game by them

I'm not blaming Skinner for the loss, but he wasn't fantastic.

Bouchard on the other hand, has not added anything positive since late November. Braindead shot decisions, braindead pass decisions, etc. Does not look like the same player from last year. If this clown wants more than $8m, you move him for a similar-type player.

Yup. It’s what many of us voice and we get grief for saying so. He’s just not reliable, game to game to game.

His highs are so high and his lows are usually quite low.

Seems like the time for some Jerry Reed…
