Confirmed with Link: Sens sign Greig to 4 year 3.25 million extension

It’s bottom 6 money for a guy that currently plays middle 6 who still has upside

I’m baffled by the amount of hate this is getting

In a vacuum, it's not a terrible contract or bet to make.

But I think it's getting hate because it's yet another young guy who got money and security based on potential and "projection". But he hasn't earned it, and hasn't contributed to any kind of winning.

This year, he's been invisible more nights than not, IMO. I don't even see much pest in him right now.

Most fans want there to be changes to this roster. But with another guy locked up, that's just less flexibility. At this point, what's the path to changing the dynamic of this team?

We don't need all of Norris, Pinto and Greig. They're all very similar types of players. One should be traded to get some puck skill, which we're sorely lacking. Individually, all good players. Together on this roster? Redundant.

Maybe it'll be Norris going... but I can't see how he has any value without us throwing in a top pick.

The dynamic of this team is going to change organically in the coming years, it just might not happen in the way it’s expected.

The reality is in the next three years Batherson, Zub, Chabot and Tkachuk are all going to be UFAs which means decisions will be made. Perron, Giroux and Amadio will all likely be gone in two years.

Maybe a shakeup happens this summer and maybe it doesn’t, but it’s coming one way or another. Just maybe not in the drastic fashion people want it to occur, though that’s obviously still possible too.

He's on pace for just under 30 points. 30 points in a $90M cap is easily a $3M player. Throw in his PKing, two-way play and physicality and to me this is not a bad contract at all.

I think he's got upside to score more too.

That's how i look at it too.

Its a dice roll for sure. He hasn't proven much, he might regress. He might stagnate. But I think he brings a lot of jam and is a decent penalty killer. That alone, should his scoring remain constant, is worth the contract to me. Ideally it would have been for a bit less, but he has upside too.

I'm ok with this. Could backfire, but could be a bargain in a year or two too.

If you agree that market value on a 2 year contract right now would be somewhere in the 2.25M-2.50M range. Then for this to be neutral value, after year 3, he needs to be worth something like 4M. Because they are overpaying by about 750k on years 1 and 2, so they need to get a 750k discount on years 3 and 4 for it to be neutral.

I don't see him vastly exceeding 4M by that time, but I understand with how rough our cap situation is that cost controlling him has some value. We know that regardless of what happens, we have Greig for the next 4 years at a specific number. I also think they are projecting for him to have an increased role with the team, and taking into account how that might affect his number. The last month or so, he's played nearly 20 minutes in some games.

Congrats Riddler. Safe is death. Hopefully he keeps getting better and contributes to the identity of the team.

Some people say overpay by $500k for a year to get benefit later as if that is a bad thing.

And i think now he has the money to afford a Riddler costume, i mean, c'mon man.

I like.

He's a player that embodies the identity Staios and Alfredsson are building the Senators around.

He just needs to get stronger and faster, and he will be an impact player.
What "identity" are Staios and Alfredsson building the Senators around? Any sources and quotes?

I don't see "a lot of hate". I see some concerns expressed regarding the amount over a 4 year contract.

How they played the game.
Some teams have had "identities" in the past such as Edmonton and Montreal with "fire-wagon hockey" (all out offensive attack with speed and skill).

Other teams have had an "identity" like the Philadelphia Flyers ("broad street bullies" - big tough strong physical and mean).

What is the "identity" that Staios and Alfredsson are trying to build (in their words)?

I like this contract as I see him as an emerging, versatile 2-way, 50 point forward before the contract requires an extension. Greig will only be 26 when this term expires. By then I expect him to take more steps towards being a regular/versatile top-9 threat. He will learn with age to be consistent, disciplined, and healthy.

He is not a $3.25M player now, but it's an investment that will pay dividends. The kind of player you need in a 7-game series.

Grieg is well worth this price. I was concerned he might be an odd one out, but glad to see we will be keeping him long term. Not going to get his number on any of my jerseys though. Need someone more longterm for that. Maybe Ullmark.

After this extension, and assuming a 92.5M cap ceiling, we will have almost 14M remaining next season to sign 8 players, including Giroux and Kleven.

If those two make around 7M combined (let's say Giroux @ 5M and Kleven bridged @ 2M), we'd have 7M left to add a backup goalie, two 4th liners, a 3rd pairing RD, plus presumably a couple scratches.

Not much room to add any player of significance. Basically would just be running it back with the same roster with a few tweaks at depth positions.
