Speculation: Sens need to trade a core player

Honestly, sometimes when I look at the Senators, I get a faint whiff of the Leafs. A core group of players who look good on paper, but invariably find ways to disappoint you in meaningful games. That leads to the question of parting with a "core" piece or making a change in leadership, which is a familiar narrative.

The solace I would take as a Senators fan, is that it's still relatively early in the season, and some of their core pieces are still very young, including Stutzle and Sanderson. If they reach their full potential, you've got a very good top line center and top pairing defenseman, which should be a solid foundation to build on or retool around.

But you've got to take steps forward, you can't just rely on teams like the Bruins falling off because, lo and behold, they're 5-3-2 and starting to come around. I thought Ottawa had good excuse for being bad last year, but I imagine the standard has to be set higher this season.

Norris or Batherson seems like the easy answer. Unfortunately Norris’ value is probably shot due to his injury history

That leaves Batherson which would suck because he’s been fantastic this year

I would keep them intact, Sens core is very, very young. They just need to gain alot more experience before becoming contender, thats all it is to it.

Josh Norris EASILY should be traded

Two arthroscopic surgeries and a reconstruction/plate surgery

that thing is a ticking time bomb
If you had a team desperate and you get out of the contract

Tkachuk would look great on the Avs lineup and i'm sure Colorado would listen seriously

I don't think that they could build a compelling package for Tkachuk, unless they had a sign-and-trade with Rantanen going to a third team, and those assets coming back to Ottawa.

Rantanen is obviously not signing in Ottawa, and Ottawa won't have the cap flexibility to pay him, even with Tkachuk going the other way.

Crouse and Stauber for Norris and Sogaard?

I have no idea what a Stauber is, but I would do Norris for Crouse in a second and drive Sogaard to the Stauber.

Sogaard doesn't have a lot of value. He has struggled to find consistency outside of the AHL and is now hurt again. He is very high risk/high reward at this point. He is also signed to a 1-way deal.

Yeah, trading from their good, young core would be a big mistake.

Progress doesn't always come in straight lines, but Ottawa is definitely a team on the way up. We just don't know when exactly they will take off, but it will happen soon.
That’s how I felt two years ago when people were talking about the core needing a shake up to get over the hump. But then I stuck it out, blamed the goalies and coaches for two more years giving the core a few more chances and now it’s just obvious that this group together isn’t working.

Probably Norris and Zub I’d say.
You keep banging that Zub drum. I know he hasn't been great this year, but it's still the position of biggest need in the org. Why do you think him, genuine question. Ya, Yak looked great in a tiny sample, but they would absolutely need a Zub replacement in the short term at least or it would be a big step back
