  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.

    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

No offense but things are actually really tough out there for most people. You don't seem to be very aware of your privilege and just assume everyone else has the same advantages and dismiss their concerns. This is pretty typical for well-off white people from the Ottawa region though.

No offense but you don't have a f***ing clue about what constitutes really tough times.

I'm not so sure dude

I would also argue that the average person in 2025 has a much better life than the average person from 25, 50 or 100 years ago

I work at a college, and 3 of my colleagues are being let go and their ability to apply for a new work permit just went flying out the window. 1 of them ha 6 weeks to get a job that fits with the govt's arbitrary definition of management, another' contract isn't being renewed after May, and another had to lawyer up to prevent being forced to take early retirement. My contract is only guaranteed till June because it was externally funded and chances of it being extended are slim.

I'm privileged as heck as I'm a middle class Canadian citizen with parent I can stay with in case I don't land something, but there's so many people that are experiencing hardships that some on here can't even fathom because they think 'be positive' and 'work ethic' are the solution to the next level wealth inequality that exists today.

Well, in 2000 it was far easier to see a path to home ownership and retirement by 55.

Technology has improved quality of life in some regards, while arguably making it worse in others

Who says I'm off white!?

This is an Ottawa Senators board, no?

Define privileged in your case.

Though I agree, and the stats back you up, I think it's compounded by the fact previous generations were better at living within their means.

I see people that don't own homes going out of country 1-2 times a year, going out of town every month, going to bars or restaurants on weekends, eating out on lunch, buying coffees, etc. it all adds up.

The amount of people I know making 60-100k for a decade complaining that they could never get in the market while they waste 10-20k a year on unnecessary things each year or refuse to be in a relationship is insane. It's half the people I know at work.

It's like, if you learned to live within your means and put 10-20k into safe long-term investments for 10 years, and weren't scared of dating, you would be able to afford a nice big single family home with plenty of budget to spare.

(this is not directed at you, but in general)

ikr - college sector really got hammered - hopefully they find the $ to keep you past June. Brampton has a new med school coming - maybe that might be an opportunity to look into?

I appreciate it mate. I'm in socially applied research, currently doing work for a small business support centre. I've been wanting to transition towards medical research (ideally on the mental health side like with CAMH), so the med school might be an option. Doing my PhD on the side and would be open to teaching courses at my uni, its just the lack of job security and having to teach courses until a position opens up is stressful. Worst case, I'm open to just taking a breather for a few months while working on my doctorate, but I've always found job hunting while employed yielded better results than when unemployed.

This is so messed up.

I wish I was rich like the rest of you with your cottages so that I could buy this place.

I got a feeling this is one of those buy our business before we go out of business type things. It's been a rough few years.

edit: meant to post this in the lounge.

Or the owner is retiring and wants to sell. If there's a type of fast food that survives the apocalypse, its the pizza joint. Also, could be the place was bought by someone who destroyed the quality and the place lost business. There was a 1 for 1 near my house that made a pretty decent slice and was consistent for years. Got sold, and people who clearly didn't know how to make pizza took over and with in 2 years are also looking to sell. Sucks because there is nowhere to get a slice if your not named Pizza Pizza.

People with cottages aren't rich...well most. Their parents or grandparents or great grandparents just bought them before the 1970s-1980s real estate boom.

When you realize how cheap cottages were in the 1970s, makes you wonder why more people didn't buy up water front properties 1-2 hour drive out of the city.

To put things into perspective...my great grand parents and parents were lower class income...they actually all pooled in together to buy the land and build the cottage together. So that's my great grand father in his 40s-50s and like 7 of his kids in theirs 20s. Many didn't even own their own property and just rented apartments.

Worked out for the next generation, but they aren't rich..they're generally average people just like everyone else living paycheck to paycheck, but also have a cottage to enjoy. These are shacks compared to homes, and not suitable for winter.

These people aren't rich.

Yup. Make good food and people will come.

People will pay more, even, for quality.

It's like I'll see lineups at Suzy q and then I'll see no one touching timmies donuts with a 10 foot poll.

We have a Gabriel's pizza close by that makes great pizza. We would much rather pay $25 for a pizza from there then pay $15 for a pizza from pizza pizza or something where you barely get any toppings....then Gabriel's is just loaded.

I would rather pay more to get the real proper thing than pay a bit less and get a "cheap imitation."

That being said, when I made minimum wage and was trying to save money, pizza pizza, dominos, little Ceasars, were my go to. It's good enough when you're on a tight budget.

You need to have both options.

Pizza pizza is not bad if you order it the right way. by default its shit but if you get thick crust and extra sauce and the right mix of toppings with Italian seasoning you can't go wrong for 20 on a pick up. Gabriel's is a little too heavy but is better.

What's crazy is when you use MLS to look at some of those places when they go up for sale. That Georgie's Pizza that was brought up has a filthy kitchen.
