Hopefully it pushes people and economies to stop being so dependent on oil.

Actually, if you look at the US economy, they've strengthened their automotive industry (and manufacturing in general) and the Dems pushed for new energy alternatives with numerous incentives. Ironically, the whole time Republicans were mocking that concept and you had mouth-breathers like Sarah Palin screaming "Drill baby, drill!"

I'm not American, but I'm amazed by how many people are so polarized by their party affliction that they can't see that the US is in much better shape than it was 6 years ago.

Not sure what Harper has left to run on if the economy is trash at election time. If this gets him out of office it just might be worth it.

Harper will have plenty to run on
-He "oversaw" the Federal Government during the 2008 recession
-He is "tough on crime" and "tough on terrorism"
-The dollar crashing is, overall, good for Ontario and Quebec so they'll be happy

It's a mistake to think that Harper is a one-trick pony

Understimating him is why he's been able to stick around for so long

The people that vote for him aren't smart enough to realize the economy is bad and he's a big part of it. Harper will keep running commercials saying he made the economy great and people will continue to be believe it.

ugh....those damned Government of Canada commercials. There seriously needs to be some sort of limit to those things. Starting to feel a little too much like 1984 or Starship Troopers (the movie version, not the novel) with all this "government is working for you" craporama every two seconds on the television.

What a freaking turnoff.

Cheap oil is going to have the exact opposite effect, unfortunately. If the price stays down then consumption will increase (by definition, really). Oil will remain the world's primary energy source until it is no longer cost effective.

The decrease in the CAD is worrisome for sure. Canada is already awful at R&D and has piss-poor productivity performance. Devaluation of the dollar will further remove incentives for innovation.

Even better, "all the people pushing for green energy are what's hurting our oil industry"

Apparently Harper Lee is publishing a sequel to to kill a mockingbird in July. I'm way too excited about this.

Yeah, I just read that as well. Pretty cool. I've never actually read the original haha. I was really unlucky that year in my English class, since most of the kids in it were idiots (and I'm an arts focused guy). I only read 1984 in college.

There were some classes that got Mockingbird, Lord of Flies, 1984, and a few others all in one year. I don't think I got to read anything in gr. 9

I highly recommend it. I feel like it's one of the few classics that almost anyone can enjoy. It's so beautifully simple yet complex at the same time. Definitely read it before the new one comes out.

I only worry that Harper Lee is being taken advantage of by her publishers. Apparently she wrote this new book decades ago and she's already said she never wants to publish again. Either way I'm thrilled to be able to read her writing again.

I literally lost my appetite when I heard the news about that Jordanian pilot. I am so incredably disgusted right now.

Does anyone know when Carleton students get their tax certificates for tuition? I still only have access to the 2013 forms.

I only read it a couple of months ago. It was in a pile of books that my wife was getting rid of and I was like, hm I never actually read that. It's a quick read. I missed it in high school because I was doing a county programme that gave me the English credit. And I guess I kind of figured if it was a book they make you read for English, it can't be that interesting.

That's such a common misconception! To Kill A Mockingbird, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, Lord of the Flies, Shakespeare... loved 'em all! I only ever disliked two books I had to read for English class: Chrysalids, which was a sci-fi book completely lacking in any reasonability or coherent plot structure. And the worst book written in the history of mankind: Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness.

The Great Gatsby wasn't so great, that was my main point of reference as I recall

I liked Heart of Darkness lol.

It's so awesome that you got to read Fahrenheit 451 in school. That book is cash.

Can't believe you said that. There's only three books I've ever not been able to finish in an English class. Chrysalids, heart of darkness, and the awakening.

And I remember loving the Chrysalids!

Though I think I read it before high school

I read To Kill a Mockingbird before high school. My grandma had a copy of it at her house, and I read it during one of those weeks during the summer that your parents ship you off to have a kid free vacation.

I actually liked most of the books that were on the school reading lists, just didn't like to have to do reports on them.

My eleventh grade teacher decided to go with "Wuthering Heights" instead of "A Tale of Two Cities".

God I hate that book . . so so much. Who in their right mind would pick that over one of Dicken's best works?

Never cared for the Great Gatsby. Lord of the Flies, Crystalids, 1984, Day of the Triffids, and Mockingbird were quite good. Never could get into Shakespeare. To this day I still have a hard time deciphering Shakespeare.

Funny, "A Tale Of Two Cities" is one of my most loathed pieces of literature of all time.

Easily the least enjoyable book I had to read throughout my entire highschool tenure.

Great Gatsby is probably my favourite book ever

Yep. As much as A Tale Of Two Cities was my least favorite HS novel, Gatsby was EASILY my favorite.

That, and Lear. Damn, I loves me some King Lear.
