Core needs to be shuffled. Offseason to do list for the new GM.

1. Chabot and/or Batherson need to be moved.

2. More size on D (that can play).

3. More speed , size and scoring in the bottom 6. If Formenton isn’t in the plans he needs to be replaced. No more Motte, Brassard playing 3rd line.

4. New coaching staff.
Start with a new coach

So hard to evaluate what is going on here without a new guy leading them

6th year of mediocrity.

Very hard to cheer for this product. I dont know, I see a lot of teams with weaker rosters and better results.

That tells me one thing, but we’ve beeb there before. Nothing changes, every game

Disagree. It’s one part but the team is very soft.
It's funny, because we're 2nd in the league in hits per game, 4th in major penalties. We're also up there in blocks, and hits taken at around 10th for each.

Idk if soft is the right term, I feel like it's more complacency, we just don't seem ready for puck battles, we're willing to engage, and don't bail on plays to avoid contact, but often seem surprised when backpressure comes, at least that's why I often see,

1. and 2. focus on our defense which I agree is suspect.

I wonder what we really have now - maybe just Sanderson & Zub? If Chabot is getting 24+ minutes a night and plays like he has been for a good chunk of this season, we will be in trouble.

A new coach for our defensemen could hopefully fix that. Otherwise, some bigger adjustments to our blueline will be required.

The hits and blocks could be a simple by-product of never having possession of the puck.

...but they do have possession of the puck. A lot. The Senators are 8th in Corsi%, 12th in Fenwick%, and 10th in Scoring chance%.

OK then I am out of explanations. I don't really see a physical team, nor do a see a puck possession team, yet the numbers tell a different story. I guess I need new prescription glasses!

BTW, the last three losses have all been on SN1, just sayin'.

Looks like @Ouroboros beat to it, our Corsi numbers suggest we have possession more often than you seem to be suggesting. Corsi is typically a very good proxy for possession.

I propose a potentially misinformed explanation for the Senators' shortcomings this season, in three points:

1. Senators forwards are fully committed to finishing their checks on the forecheck. Accordingly, they get a lot of hits, which makes the team look physical on paper. However, the opposing defencemen are always expecting to be hit by the Senators forwards, so they don't turn the puck over much, and they are always ready to take the hit. Accordingly, none of hits look big on TV, which gives viewers the impression that the team is not very physical.

2. The forward that finishes their check, including when it's too late to force a turnover, takes a long time getting back to the Senators end, causing defensive problems and confusion about who should cover who.

3. The forechecking forwards who commit to finishing their checks get wonky shoulders from the constant hitting, making them susceptible to shoulder injuries.

The problem is that they are still young & inexperienced & are learning on the job. Almost every broadcast they mention about cutting down on their mistakes especially in the defensive zone & getting better goaltending. They clearly still have a long way to go & need to upgrade at least 5 forwards & 3 defencemen, (Watson, Brassard, Luccini, Gambrell, Kelly, Holden, Zaitsev & Brannstrom).

They need much better secondary scoring & much better 5 on 5 play, their special teams are doing fine. They could also use a couple of big tough mean mobile defencemen who can also produce a few pts. There are too many guys on the bottom six that don't produce any pts & they need more secondary scoring, a lot more.

If we have the puck a lot and generate more than our share of chances ... this may come as a huge surprise given all the talk about getting pucks deep, tracking them down, getting it, shooting it and getting it again.. defending when the puck is outside the Ozone. IE the neutral zone, and then the dzone. Its a huge focus for so many teams. We don't keep the puck out of our net ... is not going to be solved by trying to ramp up the aggression on offense ..particularly when the guys we count on to ramp up that offense are the worst defensive players on the team..
Its a boondoggle and its too late for this year to get any kind of accountability ; and to focus on structure to prevent goals. I would be all for regrouping and investing in accountability and the ability to be more of a counter team than a chase with all your might team.. A team should be able to change between offensive systems and be proficient at more than one .. we show no signs of that at all.

To add to your list (which I agree with), we could use an offensively oriented D man who can add to the ES attack; someone like Orr, Coffey, Karlsson, Maker in their prime (or sub-prime). Quite a tall order & expensive type of D to get. Perhaps Sanderson will become that type of player. Perhaps Chabot could become one if the HC played him less and taught him to play a more aggressive style of game.

Kinda funny reading posts from a week ago saying we were going to play meaningful games from then on.
Funny and sad that it did not turn out that way.

I was very impressed by the Avalanche defensive system that included very tight checking of our forwards when our D had the puck behind our net. Our team had great difficulty launching an attack up the ice and getting high quality shots on net. Colorado is tough to play against because of that defensive system, their players' commitment to it, and their players' ability to play it well.

The blocks definitely are a product of it. The hits might be a contributing factor; however, I often see there hits being made after the opponent's D have already passed the puck to an F. It seems that opponents' D get to the puck faster, make a pass faster and the Fs are in the pre-planned positions quickly to receive such passes. Of course the Colorado team appears to have a more highly skilled roster of players than we do; they are the SC champions for a reason.

The thing is. There is no Crosby here. There’s no Mcdavid there’s no matthews. No makar.

They need development. They need coaching they need support. They can’t carry a team. We are not THAT talented. But these kids mixed with this joke of a staff and this GM who can’t help them either. Yeah it’s a disaster.

It's the first year of mediocrity (we're close to 0.500 and our goal differential is not too bad)

The 5 seasons before that, we were way below mediocrity

The best one was 2020-21 with Gustavsson and Murray playing really good hockey in the 2nd half of the season and the fact that we were in the weak North division.

The team we have is absolutely terrible but we have several talented guys who masks the deficiencies, a bit in the same way Carey Price was hiding how bad the Habs were for years.
