The other point is that owners are looking at this kind of investment like a stock. They buy it at a certain price, and then sell it at a much larger price many years later. That is where the money is made like a buy & hold stock market strategy. Year to year fluctuations are a small, minor concern for an deep pocket owner that has the right profile. That wasn't Melnyk.
Melnyk deserves some credit for buying the team from bankruptcy and supporting it in the early years. In the latter years he cut the budget and agreed to a strategy to trade away our better players for futures.

He was a conman through and through.

He tried to be better but he fell back in his old habits around 2010.

It really would be great for the city to have a few more buildings for middle class and moderate incomes. Being right on the LRT and all that, as well. The city really needs more housing that is affordable.

Hope it happens.
Middle class usually means middle income people.

What is "affordable housing"? Does it mean low priced accommodation for low income people?

That probably means 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in high density multiple unit apartment buildings (subsidized by local, provincial and federal governments).

Yes. I agree with that.

His level of wealth dropped pretty significantly a few years after buying the team due to a few factors. The first was some of his patents expired on some of his best drugs I think. The other was his divorce where he lost half of his money I believe (I've been through that). There was also a more minor loss when it has fined because of some tax accounting regularities by the TSX (whatever the regulatory body is called in Canada).
He was a conman through and through.

See above re: his financial situation changed.

I mean I do this for a living. Ottawa is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada. People are moving here in droves due to affordability and quality of life specifically from the GTA. Canada is also a hub for immigration. The country is growing and Ottawa is the second fastest city right now. Vacancy is 3.5%.... I think you need to do some more research.

A fake bubble? What does that even mean?
Same. I haven't had vacancies in ages, and everything rents fast. There isn't enough supply to feed demand. This bubble isn't bursting. But rates will come down in a couple of years

The City will have to invest their own money if they want affordable housing. There is no such thing as affordable housing when they are expensive to build, and to recoup investment

The Melnyk issues went far deeper than financials. Being a budget team just is what it is, but all the other stuff was a problem.

Yeah, his past dealings caught up with him. Conman ran out of rope.
Ya, I'm not making excuses for the guy.

I'm just saying his financial situation when he bought the team was different than it was several years later. I also don't presume to know what went on with his wife and would never want to get into that. But, it had a financial impact.

Fully onboard the Desmarais-Kimel group train. They have the pockets.

Andlauer would be okay too, but he's not as rich, and I'd prefer the new owner to not have decades of connection to the Montreal franchise. I hate that franchise more than the Leafs.

That is the right play, glad the NHL has common sense.

That is fantastic news. A behind the scenes show about the Senators that trends on Netflix due to Reynolds being a part of it.

Deadpool night. Hugh Jackman randomly showing up in a private suite. "Thank you for being a friend" playing over the loudspeaker when BRady starts pounding someone in the middle of the ice.

I absolutely love it.

Garrioch with the top notch info:

“Ideally, Reynolds would like to produce a series similar to the Welcome to Wrexham series outlining Reynolds’ purchase of Welsh soccer club Wrexham FC with Rob McElhinney. It’s about to be released on Disney-plus.”

Welcome to Wrexum Release Date: August 24th. Oct 13th on Disney + Canada.

Then says it’s been popular because….so it’s already been released

You're in denial of why this market stopped supporting this team. A part of it I can guarantee is because you dont live here. But the rest is denial.
you would be wrong, have lived in Ottawa for a half a century…. And have witnessed the support/attendance woes of a number of sports franchises, in this market.

The CFL struggled when-the product on the field sucked, and The CFL left and eventually returned. AAA base was popular, until is wasn’t … you can blame poor ownership for those failures…. But Ottawa fans like new sports team, and winning sports teams… but when they string together a number of losing season attendance drops off, and teams fold.

you Are deluding yourself if you actually think the majority of Senator fans stopped going to games mainly because of whom the owner was…. Rather than the product on the ice sucking, the location of the arena, lack of corporate sponsorship and other reasons.

Not surprisingly it’s a combination of all those factors and a few of them are directly attributable to Eugene Melnyk.

Empty stadiums with bad teams is not unique to Ottawa - Pitt almost folded before they got Crosby, Boston played to 9000 fans for years, Edmonton and Calgary had low numbers - prime hockey markets have all struggled.

The CFL isn’t a real league so who cares

This is honest to God feels like a fairy tale type dream that's way too damn good to be true. Can you literally name one other person on the planet that brings more instant credibility (in a non cringy way) and value to the brand than RR does?

It's the fact that there's no bigger celebrity on the planet (that doesn't suck as a person or have baggage) with his kind of outreach and marketing savvy to own the team. And this same person also happens to be a passionate Canadian hockey fan with deep ties to the city - that is what makes this damn hard to believe were not living in some poorly written Sens fanfiction novel.......Iike FFS people, Deadpool and Wolverine could actually appear together at a Sens game in a friggin marvel movie. Theres a better than 0% chance of that happening. Lmao 🤣. What a crazy world we live in....

This is literally our best shot at ever becoming cool in pop culture, as vain and bad as that sounds lol. But it's our best chance at leveling the playing field for at least a while, and it could easily open up doors to some high end players, coaches and managers that would not have been available to us under any other circumstances. If/when there's a documentary about the team, RR can offer the kind exposure and some incentives that few others teams can match.

Conor McDavid is building a massive summer home here in Sudbury (his gf/wife and her super rich family all live on rich persons lake here in town) - who knows, not too far up the ole hwy 17 from Ottawa.... What if RR offered to make him a documentary and/or get some movie cameos when he hits FA, and convinced him to go full villan on Edmonton and Toronto 😉
