It all depends on interest from buyers and how long the current owners are willing to hold on to it for I would think. If the only buyers want to move them to Houston or Kansas City or somewhere like that, it might slow up the process, but it also isn't impossible. Similar to how Atlanta ownership basically told the NHL "we're selling to this group who is going to move them to Winnipeg, or we're folding the team".
That ownership group in Winnipeg is the richest in the league btw. That's kind of a critical omission

Basically the owners of the thrashers wanted them out of the building. And without another arena in the area the thrashers had to be relocated. Different situation with Ottawa. The melnyk sisters are looking to sell as they don’t want to run the team and deal with financing a new arena I imagine. So long as there are groups prepared to pay the asking price and build the new arena in downtown Ottawa they will remain in the area. The heirs are going to sell off the CTC as well as Part of the sale. They could also keep the arena and lease to the Sens u til their new arena is ready then sell the CTC as part of a real estate transaction in kanata.

I wonder how much they sell for.

It will need to be at least 800+ Million.

Really interested to see what the group will look like.

Thats a big ask based on their $525mn valuation.

Pens sold for around that *but* they obviously have a ton fo recent success, two mega stars and the deal came with a ton of development land around their arena.

Team starts looking respectable, better sell it!

My guess is his family could care less for the team and would rather pocket hundreds of millions of dollars.

There is no way they relocate to QC. 0 percent chance, probably one of the last places that would be considered. Only real threat in my opinion is Houston.

That being said I highly doubt they relocate. Lots of local interest here and an opportunity to develop a world class site in the capital of a G 7 country. This will be a real estate deal not one based on the hockey team. Its just something that comes with it.

I disagree. If they moved them to QC, they would avoid having to change any divisions or having a team far from its division rivals/in a different timezone.

Melnyk may have also burned too many bridges, this may just be the easiest thing to do

Or this

NHL GM: "HF? Yeah this is NHL GM. How are ya?"

HF GM: "I'm doing great, just busting at the gills with futures"

NHL GM: "That's actually what I wanted to talk to you about it. We talked it over with ownership and we're gonna blow this up. We're gonna try to find the best fit we can for our players who want to win now. How about we trade consensus top 20 defenseman who is 26 years old for that 19 year old defenseman in college who won't be ready for another couple of years? With this guy, you're gonna make a jump"

HF GM: "Whhhaaaa???? He was the 4th overall pick!!!"

NHL GM: "And you won't pick 4th overall again with my guy. You'll probably actually make the playoffs"

HF GM: "Uhh you better throw in a 1st and prospect there bud. My guy is a future #f***inAllStar"

NHL GM: "The trade is player for player. Do you wanna do it or not?"

HF GM: "LOL f*** NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!" *hangs up*

HF GM's team proceeds to finish with the 4th worst record in the league again. The next year, the prospect is not the messiah. HF GM fires coach because it's been 4 years and they can't make progress. HF GM laments that they can't make any progress. NHL GM's player nearly wins the Stanley Cup

There aren't enough "AINEC" 's in this exchange

That's basically what I was saying. The only way they move is if nobody else will buy them and the owners say they will just shut it down. Not gonna happen though, someone will buy the team and keep them in Ottawa. Hopefully with a new barn for them to play in.

Already having an arena is not a good thing.

Lots of real estate developers are salivating at the opportunity to buy the Sens in order to get the inside track at a real estate development opportunity of a lifetime (building the new arena at LeBreton).

It's pretty much guaranteed to be included in that already.

They made an announcement that the new development will have an arena.

The last time the Lebreton arena deal was announced (5 years ago or so), there were 2 groups that wanted to buy the Sens and arena, even though they weren't for sale.

1. Desmarais / Laliberte (Cirque de Soleil) group wanted to buy the team / arena. Cirque wanted an arena in downtown Ottawa to have lots of their shows. Not sure if they are still interested, as I'm not sure if Cirque even exists anymore (they went bankrupt I think). Desmarais is extremely rich.

2. OSEG group (Lansdowne / 67s / Redblacks). They were partners with Eugene in the arena / condos development, which fell apart, which doesn't matter anymore as Melnyk isn't around (RIP). I think OSEG probably wants the Sens more than before because the Civic Centre (67s) needs replacing soon. Having the Lebreton arena would mean they don't have to build a new Civic Centre as the Sens and 67s could both play at Lebreton. I think this is the likely buyer.

Note: at the intermission feature just now, Bruce Garrioch mentioned both of these groups, as well as a guy from Hamilton that owns 20% of the Canadiens. He mentioned US investors as well. Mentioned that it's unknown if the Melnyk sisters will continue to own part of the team, or sell all of it.

A fair amount of assumptions made here. I am not sure about the Arizona situation but that does make sense. I dont think Ottawa is moving. However if you look at the actual geography a team like Nashville can easily switch to the east its actually closer to the east than the west. Houston can play in the west.
I don't think Sens are moving either. But, a couple of teams in the central would love to get into the Eastern Conference if that was an option. Chicago would love to trade West coast games for O6 match-ups with MTL, Toronto, NYR, Boston, and Detroit.

savvy move by HF to pass on trading Makar for McDonagh

That number is somewhat dated. The article has a value of 655m, and with Lebreton that could also factor into a higher price.

Hopefully it gets relocated to either Hamilton (where it should have been all along), or Quebec City and let's get that Hab/Nordique rivalry going again.

Since the league won't EVER move Arizona to Quebec City (or anywhere else) like they should, Ottawa's up next. It's even a short drive so Ottawa fans could still come see the Senators (And it would take just a little longer than seeing them in Ottawa). Win/Win. :naughty:
