Senators about to be put up for Sale: Ryan Reynolds interested?

He could buy them but he'd be a figurehead. He'd be a small minority owner but everyone would talk about him like he's the big boss

I think it'd be cool

I don't think he'd even be a figurehead.

He'd be a celebrity fan/minority owner. He's a pretty self-deprecating guy.

I can't see him acting like any kind of boss in this scenario. Nor would he want to - he has a lot on his plate.

That would be such a good investment. Buy low while the team is n the boonies, move them downtown and the team will double in value over 10 years.

Well remember when Derek Jeter and Michael Jordan bought the Marlins? Or rather remember when people reported they had? In reality, Jeter and Jordan basically had among the smallest shares of any of the parties in the ownership group. The main guy was some finance tycoon and then there were a couple other finance tycoons who also bought a much bigger share of the team than Jeter. But here's the thing with finance tycoons..they prefer to operate in the shadows. They'd rather let someone with charisma and popular appeal deal with all the public parts of owning a team.

And I think that's literally the only thing Ryan Reynolds could bring to the table in a deal like this. It's not like any majority billionaire bidder who can pony up $400-500 million would say "I can't do this without Ryan's 30 million". If Reynolds was in on the deal, it'd be almost certainly part of the deal that he assumes a 'public face' type role in it because that'd be the by far more valuable contribution he could make to such a bid.

I agree that he would have a very public role, I think I disagree in that I don't think people will be expecting any kind of decision-making authority from him, or even the guy who participates in press conferences on behalf of the ownership group.

I think his decision-making would be on the level you'd expect from someone who owns like 3% of the team (i.e. not exactly significant). But I would absolutely expect him to be at any press conference announcing the deal. For starters, people like him, whereas it's unlikely people especially like the billionaire who actually bankrolls the bid.

While his interest is real, I heard one expert on local radio news who specializes in NHL economics (don't remember his name) in particular, state that the league always gives preference to solitary owners. He mentioned that the favorite was some billionaire who has acted as an ambassador for the Montreal Canadiens in years past (missed his name). Whether or not this billionaire had expressed interest, however, wasn't mentioned.

But, if true...it certainly wouldn't hurt to hitch Reynolds wagon to his. The publicity alone would help to drive ticket sales and overall fanfare.

I think a guy like Reynolds owning an NHL franchise is a game changer for the NHL though. If he has a legitimate financial stake in an NHL team he is going to market the absolute hell out of it. And honestly, if there is a more likeable big name celebrity out there than Ryan Reynolds . . . I don't know him. Dream come true for a league that struggles to market itself well.

I think that will play a massive part in all this.
