If you're good enough to play in the WJC, you didn't spend much time in school anyway.
I used to handle this kind of paperwork and there were some straight A students also among early 1st round NHL picks with three WJC tournaments, especially if the parents were highly educated then commitment to hockey didn't prevent success at school.

In Sweden top athletes get higher grades than they deserve all the time because that's a way to attract new players to their secondary high schools hockey programs that are run by pro teams.

Should not the SWE goaltender have been in butterfly position? I mean after all its easier to score on the ice than top shelf? There was a lot of net open in between his pads, had he been down in butterfly it would have taken a perfect topshelf snipe to score, now it only took a shot on goal.

More like had the stick in a proper position. After Halttunen's crossbar shot in the previous shift the Swedes were probably expecting a pass across again.

How would his stick cover this massive hole between his pads? The puck is pretty much in the net before he changes position. Its better to force the opponent to make a perfect pass and shot than what transpired, putting that shot on net was the easiest thing to do for the FIN player. If the goaltender is in butterfly that option does not exist.

If he is in a butterfly, he is slow to move across. Obviously, the more dangerous play is a pass across from that position, just like the previous poster noted, which was executed just moments before the goal. Thelin wasn't expecting a shot on goal from there at all. It's impossible to "overplay the shooter" when you don't consider that the opponent might shoot.

Funny as a swedish-speaking Finn to read Swedish newspapers. All the "experts" say Finland got PP:s without causes and Finnish players "fell too easy" etc. I`ve never seen that shit in Finnish papers. It makes Swedes look like loosers actually. At the same time they throw their own, young goalkeeper under the bus. That is actually embarrassing as hell. Looser mentality Swedes.
Just check Aftonbladet and Expressen for example. Håkan Loob and his pals are morons.

I know theese "experts" are former players with minimal or non education, but throw a youngster under the bus is moronic. Sweden had a 2min 4-3 PP in OT and it was hardly on the goalie to score? Hockey players are usually dumb as rocks and it really shows when they are used for papers or on tv as experts. Always the same talk and words used. And if their team loose, then it was the refs or the other teams players that caused it.

I watched this clip today of Jonas Andersson and Wikegård discussing the loss after the game. They are clearly in agreement that there is something not just rooted in our hockey system or coaching culture but rather something rooted in society and our culture as a whole which leads to these disappointing losses. Wikegård calls it "mellanmjölk". But, what are they alluding to?? What is "mellanmjölk" ?? Some call it "law of jante". But what is it and where does it come from? Im clearly not alone in seeing a connection with our society as a whole and this loser mentallity on the ice.

Here's the segment:

I know they are like our Iltalehti and Ilta-Sanomat. More like bigger gossip-magazines, but they use SVT:s Håkan Loob + other swedish commentators phrases. SVT is Swedens official TV, so its not gossip.

Its clearly taken out of larger context with the explicit intent to stir shit up.

Tabloids are the cancer of the media world. Never give them any money, clicks or attention.

Fun thing here is that Rimpinen admitted Finns fell too easily. Don't see that very often.

Rimpinen also said that Swede`s should give some slack to their goalie. He did what he could and it wasnt entirely on him that Sweden fell. More like bad finnishing. On the PP, why did they always shoot on Rimpinens glove-side?
Also - before that "easy" penalty on the OT, Sweden got away with a 100% sure penalty. This "easy" penalty was a Swede 2-handedly from behind turned a Finn with the puck. It`s not wrestling they play. Surefire penalty - Rules are the same in preliminary games or Semi`s overtime. They dont change rulebooks.

The thing is, there is also a fine line between giving someone slack and pinpointing the reasons why the team lost. There is no doubt that Thelin is a big part why. I agree that the coaches who put him in this position deserve much more of the blame but you also can't give the guy with sub .900 Sv% behind team Sweden a free pass either.

Personal attacks, harassment in social media and such are clearly over the line but I don't necessary think there is much wrong with "we lost because this guy sucked" type of thing when the guy did indeed suck. If you want to be a professional athlete taking responsibility for your performance is a big part of it, a casual fan of whatever club you are going to play for isn't going to cut you any slack either.
