7-2 Canada EH!

You are starting to sound like a broken record.

Remember your comments before the game against Finland?

Might as well re-visit this post.
I had to straighten the guy out on his comments in the Canada- slovakia game too, but even after the Russians proceeded to lose to the Czechs and I reminded him of that it's still the same old thing. Some folks just come here to do this unfortunately and if the team they root for wins all they do is be bad winners and if they lose they are bad losers.

Same shit every year.

There have been a number of years in which Russia has played inconsistently or even poorly in preliminary games and then upped their game radically in the medal round. They have all the talent that they need to upset Canada, including a top goalie who can get hot and rob the opposition blind.

Sometimes it works the other way. A Canadian goalie steals a game or it takes a while for the Canadian players to gel as a team but eventually they come together. It’s foolish to think that Russians too can’t make this kind of thing happen.

If I were a betting man (and I’m not) I would say the Canadians should be installed as very, very slight favourites. But nobody should be surprised if things turn out the other way on the night.

If Russia comes out strong and gets the first goal, it will be a strong advantage.

They can play opportunistic and patiently and Canada will start to feel the pressure which can lead to mistakes, just making it worse.

But we’ve seen so many comebacks in big games at this tournament over the years that no lead is safe either way.

Actually, Russia is at its best when playing catch-up. They are terrible at holding lead.

Is this Russian team similar to past teams?

I feel like they are a bit more structured and disciplined than past iterations. Less reliant on individual performances.

Maybe my take is all wrong.

I'd go with 4-3 Russia in OT. Canadian team itself used to be the best motivation for Russian team to show the best it has. After that, though, Russia could play much worse, I still remember Torino'06 fail...

Go Russia go!

Either way, I'm sure it won't be an easy game for any team today.

In the past I have generally thought that a focus on puck possession and creativity is more effective than a physical, counter attacking north-south style, but I am not sure I think that anymore. May the best hockey ideology win.
