Second impressions of Marty St. Louis (Mod warning in OP)

Not ready to write off MSL. That's premature.

I think the Cally aspect is skewing a lot of opinions.

Expecting him to get on a roll at some point and score some big goals in the playoffs.

MSL reminds of Esa Tikkanen. He was brutal when Smith acquired him for Doug Weight a few weeks before the deadline in 1993. There was a game in Pittsburgh where Esa decides to pass the puck through 2 Penguin players in OT. Five seconds later. Game over. I hated him so much because Smith traded Weight for another old player and he was brutal. It was another former Oiler. Smith had acquired Lowe earlier that season and he looked done too. The following season Tikkanen went back to being Tikkanen. Lowe went back to being Lowe.

I think Marty will be better than he has been, but I'm not sure it will be this season. He may need an entire offseason and training camp to figure things it out. He looks so far from the dynamic player he was in TB and is just a headcase right now. Maybe the entire situation with how he left TB is weighing on him, who the hell knows.

But when someone demands a trade to a team, it shouldn't take this long to "get adjusted." He wanted to be here so he had to have some idea of what he was getting into here, what the team is like, etc. His buddy Brad is on the team and I'm sure they have had discussions about the team and the organization prior to the trade. It's beyond a simple adjustment period at this point.

He was in Tampa... here he is just a passenger, with no noticeable chemistry with anyone on the team.

One also has to wonder if the haphazard way Sather has thrown this forward roster together could have an impact as well... too many RWs, heavy on the playmakers like MSL and low on snipers/goalscorers, most players are from outside the organization and haven't grown up through the system together, etc. The 4th line is our most consistent line and the other lines play like a bunch of on individuals on some nights.

This bothers me as well. The homegrown Rangers were so short-lived.

Messier wanted to come to New York to carry the weight of 50 years on his shoulders. The models, the nightlife and the lifestyle were extras. Messier wasnt miserable in Edmonton. He just wanted a new challenge, with more money if course.

Nash, MSL and the rest of the long list of failed stars come to NY to either get one last big payday before retirement, have access to hotter women or give their wives unlimited time in SoHo.

Nash and MSL didnt come to NY to win. The have no command presence. The players look at them as a bunch of overpaid stars who dont work as hard as guys making much less.

I guess we have to wait for Crosby or Toews to hit UFA.

He wasn't noticeable? I noticed him a lot last night. Particularly the waived off goal, another shot Ramo made a nice save on, and a few pretty nice passes. If you want to say he is not producing, okay fair enough, he's snake bit, but not noticeable?

Outside of a few people who would still be sniffing his jock every 30 seconds, I don't think anyone does care what Callahan is doing in Tampa. It's the same handful of people over and over who can't let it go.

I feel like this is as well when I read people talk about how he's been terrible or is a turnover machine or looks just like Richards. Are we watching the same games? It's not like he's dominating without scoring, since that's more or less impossible, but he's making smart plays and doing what's expected of him off the score sheet. Yeah, that doesn't count for much given that scorers need to score, but he's not been terrible at all in my opinion.

Yeah, I think it is great Callahan is making a difference in Tampa. If I wanted to talk about it 24/7 though I would go to their board. Lamenting over what he does there really has no bearing on what MSL does (or doesn't) do here.

Definitely. I am extremely disappointed in how he has been left of the scoresheet, but it's not as if he is dogging it every night. I know some people here think that this is how it is going to be going forward, and "predicted" this epic collapse of his career, but honestly I will never post on these boards again if MSL does not find his game again during his tenure with the Rangers.

He is certainly on the ice playing hockey, just not well.

What does his height have to do with anything? Was he taller when he was PPG for a decade in Tampa? Was he 10 years younger last season?

When he's contributing offensively, it doesn't matter how big he is. When he's not, maybe he could actually hit someone...or be physically involved at all. Now he's just getting crushed every time he touches the puck. How has he fallen apart like that, seemingly overnight?

He's not playing as bad as some are making it out to be. I think the fact that he can't find a way to score is enough to be disappointed in him thus far. We don't need to be making **** up to further drive the point home. He's had some pretty average outings no doubt, but he has also had a few games where he looked like he was on the cusp of finding the first goal. Last night was one of those games, imo.

Exactly.

Not executing is one thing.

Not executing for lack of effort is another.

Not executing for lack of effort, and then not caring, is another still, and it's by far the worst.

MSL falls into the first category IMO. Same as Hank on that last goal last night for example. It sucked that he let in such a softie, but we know Hank (as an athlete) enough to know that he didn't fall short by lack of effort, and enough to know that he's harder on himself than anyone.

MSL is trying, and you can tell that he's pissed off that he's failing. People with that attitude, and the skill to back it up, don't stay down for long.
