Not a comment on yours in particular, but there is such a thing as too much of a veteran presence. A player like Bean won't develop sitting up in the pressbox all the time. The next Nate Schmidt/William Karlsson/Shea Theodore needs opportunity to become that. Some guys need to be flipped immediately.

I agree… it’s a curious position having 30 players to choose and only 23 roster spots. And there are always too many roster guys for spots available.

I do think however it would be unwise to not pick a higher value player just because they block a young guy. Or to pick mediocre players just to save cap.

Part of the process is to remove value from other franchises in a position of weakness, then redistribute it from a position of power.

Montreal
Niederreiter - Gourde - Voracek
Zucker - McCann - Bailey
Jarnkrok - Gaudette - Appleton
Ritchie - Gambrell - Blackwell

Giordano - Larsson (sign)
Dunn (sign)- Jensen
Bowey - Fleury

Price
Kahkonen
Driedger

Extra:
F:Fischer. Lizotte, Greer
D: Harrington, MacDonald, Borgen, Cholowski
G: D'Accord

Which better value players would you get? Imo this is a competitive lineup, although it locks you out of UFA and there's a lot of guys that will need to be resigned fast...

Probably not worth it to go with Zucker, Giordano and Price. Zucker is overrated and the other 2 are too old. Of course that's just my opinion. You could save 10M by replacing those 3, leaving you with a lot of space for free agency

It's tough to "build a team" without knowing what are the talks for UFA :) I picked Giordano because the D is thin, but they *could* solve that with free agents for sure.

Opted against Price, he's a solid playoff performer and all but he's 35. Team is weak at center, I think Seattle trades Gio, Zucker and Domi come trade deadline. Also, I was tempted to take Johansen from Nashville just because I think he would do really well besides Tarasenko and Landeskog, Jarnkrok was probably the safer pick.

price is 33 not 35

34 in a few weeks

still not 35, his contract ends at 38 years old. There’s a lot of elite G that are making it to 38. Seattle should def pick the best available player.

they could flip him at 40% retention for great assets. Pretty sure he would waive is NMC to a contender

Luongo and Lundqvist were done being effective by then, and they were more consistent in the early 30s than Price has been

I'm not sure why so many people are convinced Seattle takes Price. I wouldn't.

Biggest name available, puts butts in the seats, huge jersey sales. Being able to construct the team as they want allows them to not really care about that contract, and if he wants to win a Stanley Cup you can probably convince him to waive his NMC again and retain half of his contract for a big package.

Seattle is not going to have a problem putting butts in the seats. With or without Price.

Butts are going to be in the seats regardless and jerseys are going to be sold regardless. Heck, if you want jersey sales Quick's contract is half of what Price's is.

While Price could give them Fleury-esque stability, he's also coming in at 10M for five more years. I think they should gamble on young guys instead.

If you are Francis, do you

Pick price and try to flip him at the deadline with a 3.5-4m retention for solid assets

or

you pick Byron at 3.8

Or

Kulak or fleury which are useless chips

or

pick drouin which is not even sure to ever play hockey in the nhl because of his mental health situation?

in my opinion, the choice is kinda easy

I have us picking Fleury. Though Kulak is also an option. Our need at the G position is not going to be that big given Driedger, Vanecek and Kahkonen are all legit options for a 1A/1B setup.

Doesn’t Price have a Native Canadian background as well? For a Pacific NW team that is openly marketing diversity, it’s a narrative that will play well.

Flipping Price not so easy, his No-Move resumes after ED

I wish they'd pick Fleury, I like the guy and I'd rather they'd pick Drouin obviously but it's a pick that does absolutely nothing for you - and isn't even that great for the AHL team given his struggles there - while not harming us at all.

What's the point for the Blues to expose Tarasenko? Don't tell me there isn't at least one team that would've given them at least a 7th rd pick.

Even if it's at 50% salary retained, the contract expires in 2 years.

They want the contract gone, and if you trade him elsewhere then Seattle picks another player so now you have two players gone instead of just one. It's all fine and good to trade a player away to not lose him for nothing, but then Seattle just picks the next "best/valuable" one.

Flipping Price? He has an NMC and a prohibitive contract.

Contract can be retained and if he waived his NMC once, I don't see why he wouldn't again. For some reason people are really pushing this "he cannot be traded because of his NMC" narrative when we really have no idea what he's willing to do. Nobody imagined Price could be available until he was.
