Seattle Expansion Draft

You resign MacD and expose him in the draft. The Kings have no one to replace his physical element internally. Hutton being brought back this summer on a 2 year deal may be an option for someone to expose.

I'm not sure what I want more between Kupari recovering from this injury and turning into a solid top-6 forward, or MacDermid developing enough to be a long-term option as a #6 on a future competitive Kings team. They play so much differently when he's in the lineup, and him stepping up on Cousins after he went after Porkins is exactly the type of culture-defining play we should want on our team.

I know that may sound absurd, but I'm confident between last year's and this year's drafts we'll have more lottery tickets as potential top-6 forwards, whereas MacD is a dying breed. It would suck to lose him to Seattle, but given the minimal options they'll have to take from on our roster, I could see it.

As for the Roy/Walker/Clague conundrum... you have to lose SOMEONE.

If Clague displays any kind of aptitude at playing in the NHL between now and the summer of 2021 then yea I would tend towards keeping him over both Walker or Roy just based on age.

They have to expose at least ONE defenseman that is under contract in 2021-22 (OR is an RFA) AND that has played 40 games in the previous season or 70 the past 2 seasons.

EDIT : Currently the Kings have TWO players on defense that meet that criteria. Doughty and Roy. MacDermid and Walker are RFA this summer and may or may not be gone.

Which, of course, it will. Making most every conversation about the outcome completely hypothetical and mostly useless.

As far as MacDermid and Walker go, what do you believe the options are here? They are not going to let them walk. Trade? Maybe, but the odds are greatly stacked in the favor of them getting another contract the way the team lines up today. And yes, the conversations are hypothetical, but the GM has to think ahead, and as fans we get to play along. That's the whole purpose of a discussion board. D men are more valuable in an expansion draft. The odds as of today, not knowing the make up of the team next year, favor protecting Doughty (required), Roy, Walker and Clague (if they feel he is still part of the future, otherwise he's ripe to be traded for assets vs exposing him for nothing). MacD is the perfect player to expose on defense that meets the requirements.

Are there really fans of the Kings who have watched this season who are afraid of losing Brown? All his numbers are down except his body weight.

Why would Lizotte be exempt?

I could be wrong, but the only wording I can find is

"A player aged 20 or older (based on age on December 31 of calendar year in which the season starts) earns a year of professional experience by playing 10 or more Professional Games under an SPC in a given League Year"

Lizotte only played 1 professional game last year, so based off of the above he'd be exempt. But I can't find a concrete source other than article's parroting the same language, so I don't know.

As it stands right now the Kings will have to sign a UFA Dman which is what they're looking at doing and likely exposing him to Seattle...
Doughty, Roy, Walker are protected as of right now...
Anderson, Bjornfot are exempt while Clague and Brickley would need protection..
I'd bet on us moving/creating a package around Clague, JAD and a roster player to get a youngish players ala Kapanen or maybe make a play with the TBL for one of their forwards? They'll be needing the cap space really soon and will also need to plan for the expansion draft
Would actually pay good money to watch this board freakout if they brought back Forbort.

Forbort is doing his usual thing in Calgary, 4 games played 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points, averaging 18:05 minutes of ice time. Is his stick made of lead?

Forbort at his best would have thrived on a Sutter cup team, but he's just not that great at anything. I hope he does well, but he didn't provide much of anything. He's a decent bottom-pairing option.

I found the clarification. Lizotte would not be exempt. It's the wavier rule of 20 years or older, 1 pro game = season for the expansion draft. This is per Cap Friendly.
