Sean Monahan's Pleasantly Surprising Season...

I think most assumed all the injuries had caught up to him.. turns out he just needed time to heal. What a disaster of a trade for Calgary, as we ended up with Kadri who hasn't been too bad, but being locked into that contract while floundering and losing a first is tough. Glad to see Money is bouncing back though considering all that has transpired.. Columbus looks to be moving in the right direction.

He’s definitely still got it. Now that his hips are properly healed up, he’s the same guy he was before. Shame we never got to see him reunite with Johnny on the ice, but he’s going to be a huge piece for us for awhile, and by all accounts is a great guy.

Reminds me of Selanne in a way, I can't remember where I heard it but he said he owes his career resurgence to the 2004 lockout. It allowed him to sit back and get his body right, Tony just needed more time is all.

Any Habs fan can tell you it’s not a surprise. He was great in Montreal when healthy. That’s the big question mark with him. Health.

Monahan is awesome. He's a glue type player on any line and in any position he plays. Very high hockey IQ. If he was younger I have no doubt Montreal management would have brought him back. Columbus got him at a bargain price due to injury concerns.

No. Columbus got him because he wanted to play with JG.

Monahan was never completely honest with the Flames early in his career when it came to his health. Glad he’s healthy and wish him all the best.

You think he left significant money on the table ?

He took the contact offered by the team he wanted to play for. He didn’t want to go anywhere else. Jets wanted him back and I’m sure other teams would have been interested. Who knows what a desperate team would have offered.

Yeah, this is fantasy land talk. No team offered him a more significant contract in terms of length or AAV.

Here are the reactions on this board to refresh the memory(where you even mention his health lol), most thought it was an inflated contract. It was actually a good AAV, but due to injury he couldn't get more, no other reason.

Last edit to drive home the point:
If he didn't get injured and continued his 20-30 goal 60 point pace, you think a 29 year old UFA with those numbers gets a 5x5 contract ? No chance at all.

Maybe that means something in the regular season. But when it’s the playoffs and the speed of the game picks up, he can be devoured by the speed of the game, especially against fast teams.

A bit surprised his points are as high as they are, but he's proving at this point he's better than Lindholm and I only bring that up because of some of us saying teams should go after Monahan instead of Lindholm last year.

Right now Columbus has a nice free agent signing and Boston has to be more unimpressed with Lindholm.

However that's 35ish games into their deals.

Nobody should be surprised. Most of us predicted Monahan to be a PPG player this year seeing how he is their #1C and he gets top minutes 5 on 5, on the #1PP unit and on the PK. And he was quite good in Winnipeg last season, too bad the Jets couldn't resign him.

No one cares
I wish we could have kept him in Montreal, a great mentor to our young forwards and made everyone better who played with him. Great on faceoffs and while not a speedster he always seemed to be where he needed to be on the ice, very smart player.

It's such a tragedy what happened to Gaudreau because they would have been a productive duo.

It seems like he's landed in the right spot, too. Columbus has been an organization that has had some pretty bad luck in the past finding quality center depth and he seems to have plenty of game left in him. Great character guy, too.

I don't think Monahan was dishonest, his injuries were always ones where surgery was a last resort because they weren't going to get worse with playing, it was just about being able to handle the pain. Since he wanted to play through the pain, the team allowed him to until their season was done. I know people love to blame the team, but that was a poor choice by Monahan IMO and I say this is one of Monahan's biggest fans.

Bennett on the other hand, straight up lied to every team about needing shoulder surgery when he was draft eligible, which was why he was unable to do a pull-up.

People forgot that it was 2024 and $5M AAV isn’t what it used to be. The overreaction was silly from the start. Wouldn’t have an issue if the focus was on the length, but it was on the dollars too. Pure silliness (not from you, from many in that topic).

Who is “most of us” because it’s certainly f***ing not HFBoards

I’d argue almost 100% of hockey fans, Columbus included, did NOT predict him to be PPG. And I live in Columbus.

That thread shows the blatant stupidity that runs rampant on these boards... 5.5m per is not even top 6 center money any more... yeah the term was questionable because of his health, but the actual salary was blown way out of proportion at the time and by you now.

Suggesting there is no chance he could have been offered more than 5.5m on a shorter deal when he was coming off a 26g/59pt season is straight up asinine.

Side note you will never see in the recaps but only watching our games in person. He has basically retrieved every single "memory" puck i've witnessed this year. For example last night our best prospect, Mateychuk, got his first point but the ref just picked up the puck and started to skate off. Monahan quickly rushed to the ref right before he made it to the admin box to grab the puck.

Now he's a true 1C right now but as he ages its good to know we have a true class act on the team and we were robbed of OT hugs from Johnny because of a murderer
