Seabrook vs Chelios (Retiring the #7)

They will retire both, moot point. The Canadiens have done it.

Chelios is obviously the much better player, but you get huge honour points for winning a cup (or three) for your club.

Chelios and it's not close. Yes, Seabrook had more team success, but Chelios was a far superior player. It's like asking (if they wore the same number) whether Rick MacLeish was more deserving to get his number retired over Claude Giroux.

Yes it is. I was comparing Giroux to Chelios and Seabrook to MacLeish. MacLeish was a good player (maybe 4th or 5th most important) on the 1970s Flyers which won two cups. Giroux has been top-5 in Hart Voting several times, clearly the best player on his team and one of the best at his position but has zero cups (but 1 finals appearance). No brainer the Flyers would retire Giroux before MacLeish.

If two players are somewhat comparable, sure go with the one with 3 cups to zero. But Chelios >>>> Seabrook. So no comparison.

whoa whoa whoa, let's wait until claude giroux makes a post-season all-star team before we compare him to chris chelios.

incidentally, rick macleish led both SC winners in scoring, and by sizable margins both times.

so i'm assuming anyone saying seabrook started watching hockey 3-4 years ago right?

Are you freaking kidding me right now?

We're talking one of the best defenceman of all time, a hall of famer and multliple norris trophies vs a really really good defenseman who looks much better cause he plays with keith

Chelios won 3 norris trophies in an era where they were being exchanged between bourque, coffey and langway.

lets be serious now

Yeah, that whole situation was on Chicago management for saying he was done as a player and refusing to negotiate an extension with him. Murray told the media he was done as a player and Chelios asked for a trade.

Yeah thats what I dont get. Hate your management for acting like trash to one of your all time greats, not the player because management are being dick heads to him.

Detroit doesnt treat their star players like dirt ever, especially someone of Chelios' calibre, the fact that he tries to maintain a relationship with the Hawks alone is surprising the way the fans treat him.

Retiring a jersey isn't just who the best players are. It's who had the most impact on that team.

Chelios is a trader signing with Detroit, I know $ Bill screwed him over. He should of signed with the Avs if he wanted a cup anyone but Detroit.

Chelios is better career wise however seabrook would be retired over him (provided we don't do a double retirement). What people ignore is that Chelios left on a sour note won cups with the teams biggest rival, sure his prime was here, but he won cups with Detroit and is more affiliated with their organization over ours (he might be a assistant coach)

TLDR Chelios being better doesn't warrant his number being retired. Seabrook being a major part of 3 cup wins + him having a better relationship with the organization will win out in the end

This.

And Chelios was my favorite player growing up (before his move to the Wings).

Again, it's not about Chelios vs Seabrook as players. I get that Chelios was a superior individual, but if you were limited to celebrating one player, is it the individual from a less sucessful era, or the fourth best player in the best era of the Chicago Blackhawks.

It's a retired jersey. It is absolutely ONLY about the individual.

Why on earth would they retire Brent Seabrooks number?

There is no way it wouldn't be a double if it was ever done... and I'm a biased fan who was a huge Chelios fan in the 90s who would love to see it double-retired in the future despite Chelios's Detroit situation of the past and current moments.

I also wouldn't mind seeing, what so won't be happening, a joint Sharp-Amonte retiring of #10... throw Dennis Hulls name up there too why not

No, we're talking about an integral member of the greatest Blackhawks team ever assembled vs an individual great who was better but may not be associated with real championship success.

Who do you celebrate/honour if you have to choose?

I'd pick Seabrook.

Same reason why guys like Glenn Anderson have their numbers retired. Great players on even better teams.

You can pretty much tell the age of every poster based on their answers...right? Anyone old enough to watch hockey in the 80's and 90's considers the question patently absurd.

Wow. Seabrook is a very good, but forgettable player on a great team.

Glenn Anderson was a PPG player for a career.

You're saying that Brent Seabrook is so remarkable that he should forever be enshrined in greatness by having his number retired?

I'll tell you something--If they make that call then the Hawks are going to start running out of numbers real quick.

I wasn't old enough to watch until the mid 90s and I find it absurd

I don't understand why they would retire Seabrook's jersey because of team success. While a very good player obviously, he's not great enough for the Blackhawks to retire his jersey. I would imagine the Blackhawks have higher standards for retiring jerseys. If you're going to retire Seabrook MOSTLY because of team success then why not Crawford too?

They will retire both, moot point. The Canadiens have done it.

Chelios is obviously the much better player, but you get huge honour points for winning a cup (or three) for your club.

So 1 more cup and they should retire Corey Crawford too? How about Oduya? Andrew Shaw?

Retiring numbers because of team success is dumb. Seabrook is very good, but not an elite type player that deserves his number retired.

The team already has one dual retired jersey number. They will do the same with #7

I can't stand HF right now lol, it must be littered with 15 year olds....only here would:

Toews > Messier
Kane > Lindros
Seabrook > Chelios
