I’m not saying you realistically couldn’t but if that’s the case, why in gods name would the Blackhawks allow him to keep band-aiding himself just to play horrible hockey? If this actually is a surgery to continue his playing career, why wasn’t it done either of the prior two seasons when we had nothing to play for in January/February with a long offseason? If it was injury related the Blackhawks had to know by last season it was a significant problem that wasn’t going to just go away on its own.

He must have been giving himself cortisone shots all by himself. Didn’t tell anyone and the team didn’t know yet he can’t lift his arm over his head? Sure thing.

I assume the contractor is insured which means that as long as he is on ltir the acquiring team would not be out any cash money from the salary perspective. This is different from the Nathan Horton contract which was not insurable because of a pre-existing condition when he signed.

Great point. I have no idea if that's the case, but, if it is, that makes Seabs contract massively easier to move. Would appreciate further insight on this angle, please.

I don’t think there’s anyway his contract is traded next season. Probably July 2021 after the bonus is paid.

I just don’t understand why they would list him as a healthy scratch after the **** show in October if he was clearly this hurt. Doesn’t make any sense. And none of this is “Seabrook hate”.
Maybe he was keeping it to himself, trying to tough it out for his teammates. These NHL guys are out there half dead sometimes, toughest guys in any sport when it comes to playing no matter how hurt they are. Regardless, its clear he was hurt no matter what they did or didn’t say. They are not faking three pretty serious surgeries to hide a guy on LTIR.

I’m not suggesting they’re faking three surgeries, but I think you’re being naive if you don’t believe there’s layers to this.

I think most likely his contract is going to Seattle, probably with a lesser asset attached to it. Makes sense if hes litretired by then.

IMO, once Seabrook realized he wasn't going to be a top 6 dman any more, he decided to get some nagging injuries looked at, and the surgeries are the result. Its really not hard to understand a team first, old school guy playing through injuries. It used to happen all the time.

I wonder if in the next CBA agreement they reexamine how LTIR is done. Seems like with all the maneuvering going on with so many players and teams, a guy who is clearly injured long term should just be able to retire, get his money paid out to him over x amount of years, and have his cap hit off the books.

Say the Hawks retain 50%, so $8.25M over 4 years ($2.06M/yr). That's a helluva lot better than $6.875M (math major, lol). Yeah, next season would be a $6.06M hit (bonus). But still. So, what do you think it would take to get a deal done? And who beside Toronto would be logical?
Well a big part of the reason Toronto makes so much sense is that they can swallow that salary. They're owned by two giant telecoms companies and are renowned for eating salary in the name of cap space or LTIR relief. They're the best example of a team who would be willing to do that.

It still happens all the time. Even in beer league, guys deal with the nagging stuff, until they can't. Ninety percent of the guys over thirty five that I play with, have had some kind of surgery, or will have it in the next couple years. This is not uncommon for hockey players that play later in life.

The issue myself and a bunch of guys here have is with Foley and his pity party, defending Seabrook's honor from "conspiracy theories" that don't even exist. There was no reason for him to exaggerate his condition and defend him, as nobody was attacking him. All he accomplished was bringing unnecessary attention to the situation, and maybe even casting doubt in some people's minds in regards to the injuries... This was basically my reaction to the entire Seabrook sequence:

I think the conspiracy theories Foley made reference to exist and are external to Hawks fandom. To wit, check the main board lately?

But it wasn't a national broadcast. He was talking to Hawk fans. I thought it was absurd, and I'd be willing to bet Seabrook didn't appreciate it either. Especially if he was exaggerating.

For sure, he was addressing Hawks fans. The conspiracy theories are out there and they're whack. I don't blame Foley an iota for being disturbed. As to exaggeration, if Foley did, shame on him.

Obviously he was exaggerating. If Seabrook really couldn't lift his arm above his shoulder he wouldn't be cranking slap shots. And....until the last week...nobody close to him even KNEW he was injured. At all.

Most likely Foley exaggerated. But that's not definitive. And, as others have pointed out, cortisone shots & other treatments can enable one to play "quasi normally."

Seabrook's son just turned 5 at the start of this season.

How many high hard ones is he throwing to this kid?

Underhand toss is likely sufficient.

Foley preaching BS again, tired of his pontificating sometimes. Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining

Really? So youre saying Keith and Toews are lying in this article, where they indicate they knew he was playing through injuries?

Everyone here is very aware of your disdain for Seabrook. But at this point, youve pretty much gone off the rails. He was hurt. He was playing hurt. His teammates knew he was playing hurt. Its all really just that simple.

They knew he was dealing with nagging injuries. "Not to the extent that it required 3 surgeries." That is ALL I am saying. It's being blown out of proportion. It is getting media attention because the Hawks WANT media attention put on it.

Every guy that plays hockey into his mid thirties is dealing with "nagging injuries". Period.

Doesn't the fact that the Hawks are saying they expect him to be ready by training camp tell you these are not major surgeries? Read between the lines.
