Alexandre Daigle carved himself out a little 600 game .5ppg career; but he's also considered the biggest bust in NHL history.

I think it's fair to call Kakko a bust to this point, but another #2 pick, Hedman, was also called a bust after his first four seasons in the league. Kakko can certainly get rid of that tag.
And it never made sense at all to Daigle a bust. I agree with the other poster. It’s misuse of the word. You can’t call Daigle a bust. He had something like 50 pts as an 18 year old rookie on one of the worst teams of all time. Disappointing? Sure. Bust? Nope.

It's not misuse of the word. "Bust" means to lose a great deal of value, it's derived from the economic phrase "boom or bust", and Kakko clearly isn't worth a #2 overall pick anymore.

He doesn't "suck" though, he's a good hockey player.

This is just a bad take on hockey and player valuation. Age, defensive acumen, prior opportunity and usage, along with a non-linear development path.. he is not in the bust category by any means. He still has time to grow his game offensively in a new system. Defensively, he's already there.

The term bust is thrown around about as loosely as generational.. it's pretty much lost all meaning at this point. It's like Alexandre Daigle.. was he a disappointment based on his draft position, absolutely.. was he a bust, definitely not. He still had an NHL career where he put up good points totals a number of years, playing over 600 games and putting up 0.53 PPG. Disappointing based on draft position, absolutely.. but that's not a bust and neither is Kakko.
You clearly don't understand what makes a player a bust. It's his performance compared to expectations, which are defined by his draft rankings. Nobody drafts a second overall to be a 3rd line grinder. Nobody would call Kakko a bust, if he was drafted on the 2nd round, but foe a 2nd overall pick he is a massive failure and a bust.

He was also running into some early concussion issues.

It wasn't my opinion that he was busting, it was posted on hfboards quite a bit though.
I just used the search function (you should try it) for Hedman and Bust in the content. There are maybe 6 people labeling him a bust in 2011. Two of them said they would have drafted Ryan Ellis over him so lets ease up on HFBoards authority on what constitutes a bust for a 21 year old.

Yeah, there is this thing called term on contracts, Verbeek used his brain, unlike yourself constructing that sentence, by not pulling the trigger on their signings where he handcuffs the team down the road when Leo, Sennecke, Z, Gauthier, Mintyukov, and McT require giant raises, granted they all pan out. If they signed, say Montour, to a long term deal, that 7 mil corners Anaheim whereas if Trouba stays, he’s making around 3-5 mil on his next contract.
Except he WANTED to make those type of contracts, he just failed to convince any of them to sign.

I think you're making too big of a deal out of what I said

Incorrect.. a bust is far different than a disappointment. A bust is not a player that doesn't live up to expectations but still has a respectable NHL career.. just like these millions of "generational players"... Guys like Bedard.. great prospect with tons of upside.. but by no means in the small group of what a generational player should be.

I think that the article on Kakko accelerated his being traded (plus isn’t there a Christmas deadline)? But I think he would have been gone by the deadline. Everyone had him as a star in the making when drafted..and remember it was the first time the Rangers had such a high pick since Brad Park was drafted 2nd in 1966. 3rd line players, which is what he is now, are pretty common.
The question is did the Rangers mess up his development or is he one of these guys that every sport in virtually every draft has: a high pick that doesn’t turn out. I tend to think the latter but the Rangers history with high draft picks (10th and above) isn’t very good.

Drury might have felt he made a mistake when Trouba refused to go to Detroit. As it turned out, the Mark Messier Award for Leadership winner couldn’t put that behind him and it became an albatross around his and the team’s neck. So he took an offer that wasn’t substantially lower than anyone else would make and sent him 3,000 miles away to a team that is mediocre now.

Maybe the Rangers turn it around but right now things are horrible and they have some tough opponents…not the Chicagos and Nashvilles they have been losing to.

If the Rangers turn it around by trading Kakko the world is crazy. He was basically the strongest player of the Rangers in goals%, and such a low cap hit the other players should have appreciated. On paper it looks like the dumbest trade made in ages.... trading a 23yo defensive star basically for a 3rd round pick!

Unless he really was the problem, this might hurt the Rangers for a decade and a half.

He’s on record stating he tried to sign Stammer , Montour, and March but they all wanted too much term. Do your homework, bud
If any GM thought montour was signing for less than 7 years that GM is a moron.

Pat verbeek made a bad trade, to make up for the fact that Pat verbeek missed out on all of UFA, because he couldn't convince anyone to sign, because he didn't use his brain for 4 seconds to realize montour would want term?

Truly a wonderful series of events

Kakko has little value

Dude is a 3rd liner.

Borgen is a good bottom pairing D.

Doubt Kakko becomes better than what he is now. He also bascially asked for a trade publicly via his recent call out of team.

Rangers couldnt develop him, and he busted hard being unable ti meet minimal expectations for 2nd OA

Both sides can move on
Kakko is only 23 with alot of potential. he's a legit NHLer he very well could breakout in Seattle

Considering the extreme hype before the draft, calling him The Chosen One, comparing him to Lemieux and what not I think it’s safe to say he was a complete bust.

He got the same hype as McDavid and Crosby but did not manage to live up to it.

Borgen may help NYR this year. The rot with long deals will be there next year as well.

To me, this seems like a "stfu peasant, be gone" trade more than having some deeper logic or understanding.

It's going to be interesting to hear what Kakko has to say after the trade.
